Pois nem é necessário que uma pessoa sempre escolha as mesmas coisas quando todas as circunstâncias são iguais, nem a ação sem uma causa, se não vir a ser da mesma maneira. Pois a deliberação, a escolha, a decisão e a pessoa são a causa da ação desse tipo, (e a pessoa), tendo em si o poder de deliberar sobre as circunstâncias, também tem a capacidade de não fazer a mesma escolha desde as mesmas coisas. To say that, when all the external circumstances are similar, either (1) someone will choose, or even do, the same things or (2) something will be without a cause, and that of these (2), that something should come to be without a cause, is impossible, while (1), that (someone) chooses the same things when the circumstances are the same, shows that the external causes have control over the things that we do - this is not sound. For neither is it necessary for a person always to choose the same things when all the circumstances are the same, nor is the action without a cause, if it does not come about in the same way. For the deliberation and the choice and the decision and the person are the cause of action of this sort, (and (305) the person), having in himself the power of deliberating about the circumstances, has also the ability not to make the same choice from the same things.
