—Tales son —concluí—, en orden a la naturaleza de los dioses, los discursos que conviene, a mi parecer, que oigan y que no oigan, desde la infancia, hombres cuyo principal fin debe ser honrar a los dioses y a sus padres, y mantener entre sí la amistad como un bien nada pequeño.

—Lo que hemos dispuesto sobre este punto —dijo— me parece muy razonable.

—Ahora, si queremos hacerlos valientes, ¿no es preciso que lo que se les diga tienda a hacerles despreciar la muerte? ¿Crees que se puede temer la muerte y tener valor?

—No, ¡por Zeus! —exclamó.

—Ahora bien, un hombre que está persuadido de que existe el Hades y es horrible, ¿podrá dejar de temer la muerte? ¿Podrá preferirla en los combates a una derrota y a la esclavitud?

—Eso es imposible.

—Luego nuestro deber es estar muy en guardia respecto a los discursos que tengan esta tendencia y recomendar a los poetas que no denigren tan simplistamente todo lo del Hades, con tanto más motivo cuanto que lo que refieren ni es verdadero ni beneficia a los que han de ser guerreros.

—Sin duda —asintió.

—Borremos, pues, de sus obras —dije yo— todos los versos que siguen, comenzando por los siguientes:

Yo preferiría la condición de labrador

al servicio de un hombre pobre,

que viva del trabajo de sus manos,

a reinar sobre la multitud

toda de los muertos(1).

Y éstos:

Se mostraría a las miradas

de los mortales y de los inmortales

esta estancia de tinieblas y de horrores,

aborrecida por los dioses mismos(2).

Y después:

¡Ay de mí!, en las estancias

de Hades aún nos queda

un alma y una imagen, pero

privada de todo entendimiento(3).

Y también:

Él sólo piensa; los demás

son sombras errantes(4).

Y éstos:

Su alma, al salir del cuerpo, voló al Hades

llorando su destino y echando de menos

su virilidad y su juventud(5).

Y también:

Su alma, como el humo, se sume

bajo la tierra dando gemidos(6).

Y, en fin:

Como los murciélagos, que en el fondo

de un antro sagrado revolotean dando chillidos,

cuando uno de ellos ha caído

de la roca, y se enganchan los unos a los otros,

así ellas se iban dando gemidos(7).

Conjuremos a Homero y a los demás poetas a que no lleven a mal que borremos de sus obras estos pasajes y otros semejantes. No es porque no sean muy poéticos y que no halaguen agradablemente el oído público; pero cuanto más bellos son, tanto son más peligrosos para los niños y para los hombres que, destinados a vivir libres, deben preferir la muerte a la servidumbre.

—Tienes razón.

—Borremos también estos nombres odiosos y formidables de Cocito, Estigia, Infiernos, Manes y otros semejantes, que hacen temblar a los que los oyen. Quizá tienen su utilidad para otro objeto; pero es de temer que el terror que ellos inspiran enfríe y debilite el valor de nuestros guardianes.

—Este temor es muy fundado —dijo.

—¿Los suprimes, pues?

—Sí.

—Y ¿nos serviremos, lo mismo en la conversación que en poesía, de expresiones enteramente contrarias?

—Evidentemente.

—¿Quitaremos igualmente esas lamentaciones y sollozos que se ponen en boca de los grandes hombres?

—Es una consecuencia necesaria —convino— de lo que acabamos de decir.

—Veamos antes si la razón autoriza o no esta supresión —seguí—. ¿No admitimos que el hombre de bien no mirará como un mal la muerte de un amigo semejante a él?

—Es cierto, lo admitimos.

—No llorará, por consiguiente, por él, como si le hubiera sucedido una desgracia.

—No, ciertamente.

—Digamos igualmente que ese hombre se basta a sí mismo para vivir bien, y que tiene sobre los demás hombres la ventaja de no necesitar de nadie para ser dichoso.

—Nada más cierto —dijo.

—Luego no será para él una desgracia perder un hijo, un hermano, riquezas o cualquier otro bien de esta naturaleza. Cuando esto le suceda, no se lamentará, sino que lo soportará con toda la paciencia posible.

—Sin duda.

—Luego con razón suprimimos en los hombres ilustres las lamentaciones, y las reservamos a las mujeres, y no a las más dignas entre ellas, así como a los hombres viles; puesto que queremos que los que destinamos para guardar nuestro país se avergüencen de semejantes debilidades.

—En esto obramos perfectamente —dijo.

—Conjuremos una vez más a Homero y a los demás poetas para que no nos representen a Aquiles, el hijo de una diosa,

Tan pronto echado sobre el costado, tan pronto

boca arriba o boca abajo sobre la tierra,

tan pronto errante, presa del dolor,

sobre la ribera del mar estéril(8),

ni

Tomando el polvo negruzco con dos manos,

y cubriéndose con él la cabeza(9),

o llorando y gimiendo; ni a Príamo, rey casi igual a los dioses, suplicando y

Revolcándose por el estiércol,

y llamando uno tras otro

a cada uno por su nombre(10).

También les suplicamos que no nos representen a los dioses llorando y exclamando:

¡Ay de mí! ¡Cuán lamentable es mi suerte,

madre desgraciada de un héroe(11)!

Y si no respetan a los demás dioses, que no tengan al menos el atrevimiento de poner en la boca del más grande de ellos estas palabras:

¡Ay de mí! Veo con sentimiento

a un mortal que me es querido,

huyendo alrededor de las murallas;

mi corazón está turbado(12).

Y en otro pasaje:

¡Desgraciado de mí! He aquí el momento

en que Sarpedón, el mortal que más quiero,

va por la voluntad del destino a perecer

en manos de Patroclo el Menecíada(13).

Porque, mi querido Adimanto, si nuestros jóvenes toman en serio esta clase de historias, y si no se burlan de todas estas debilidades, como indignas de los dioses, les será difícil creerlas indignas de sí mismos; puesto que de todas maneras no son más que hombres, no se avergonzarán de tales acciones y discursos, y a la menor desgracia que les suceda, se abandonarán cobardemente a los gemidos y a las lágrimas, sin vergüenza ni entereza.

—Nada más cierto que lo que dices —asintió.

—Acabamos de ver que no debe ser así, y debemos atenernos a las razones expuestas mientras no se nos presenten otras mejores.

—Sin duda, no debe ocurrir.

—Pero tampoco será conveniente que se sientan inclinados a la hilaridad. Una risa excesiva da lugar casi siempre a una alteración también violenta.

—Lo creo así —dijo.

—Luego no debemos consentir que se nos represente a los hombres grandes, y menos aún a los dioses, dominados por una risa que no puedan contener.

—Mucho menos —dijo.

—Y no aceptaremos a Homero cosas como ésta:

Una risa inextinguible estalló entre los dioses,

cuando vieron a Hefesto agitarse cojeando(14).

Esto, según tu razonamiento, es inadmisible.

—Si tú dices que es mío… —dijo—. Sea, no hay que admitirlo.

—Sin embargo, la verdad tiene derechos, que es preciso respetar. Porque, si no nos engañamos cuando dijimos que la mentira nunca es útil a los dioses, pero que lo es algunas veces a los hombres, cuando se sirven de ella como de un remedio, es evidente que su uso sólo puede confiarse a los médicos y no a todo el mundo indiferentemente.

—Es evidente —dijo.

—Sólo a los magistrados supremos pertenece el poder mentir, a fin de engañar al enemigo o a los ciudadanos para bien de la república. La mentira no debe nunca permitirse a los demás hombres, y así diremos que un particular que engaña al magistrado es tanto o más culpable que un enfermo que engaña a su médico, que un atleta que oculta al maestro encargado de su formación las disposiciones de su cuerpo, y que un marinero que disimula al piloto el estado de la nave y de sí mismo o del resto de la tripulación.

—Es muy cierto —dijo.

—Por consiguiente, si el magistrado coge en mentira a algún ciudadano,

sea de la condición de los artesanos,

sea adivino, sea médico, sea carpintero(15),

le castigará severamente, como a quien introduce en el Estado lo mismo que en la nave un mal capaz de trastornarle y perderle.

—Este mal indudablemente perdería al Estado, si los actos correspondiesen a las palabras —dijo.

—¿No deberemos también desarrollar en nuestros jóvenes la templanza?

—¿Cómo no?

—¿No son los principales efectos de la templanza para la mayoría hacernos sumisos para con los que mandan y dueños de nosotros mismos en todo lo relativo a comer y beber y en los placeres amorosos?

—Sí, así me lo parece.

—Por lo mismo, aprobaremos el pasaje de Homero en que Diomedes dice:

Amigo, siéntate, guarda silencio

sigue mis consejos(16).

Y este otro:

Los griegos marchan llenos

de ardor y de valor,

en silencio, mostrando

su respeto a los jefes(17),

y todos los demás pasajes semejantes.

—Los aprobaremos.

—¿Diremos lo mismo de estas palabras?:

Borracho, que tienes

los ojos de un perro

y el corazón de un ciervo(18),

¿y lo que sigue, así como todas las injurias que los poetas y los demás escritores ponen en boca de los inferiores en contra de los superiores?

—Ésos no están bien.

—Semejantes discursos no son a propósito, creo, para inspirar moderación a nuestros jóvenes, aunque si les inspiran algún deleite, no debe sorprendernos. ¿Qué piensas?

—Pienso como tú —respondió.

—¡Pero qué! Cuando Homero hace decir al sabio Ulises que nada le parecía más bello

Que mesas cubiertas

de pan y carne,

y un escanciador sacando

el vino de la crátera

para llevarlo y derramarlo

en las copas(19),

¿te parece apto para que el joven que lo oiga tenga autodominio?

Y en otra parte,

Que la muerte más triste

es perecer de hambre(20).

O cuando nos presenta a Zeus olvidando, por el exceso de la pasión, los proyectos que había formado cuando sólo él vigilaba durante el sueño de los dioses y de los hombres; y de tal manera impresionado a la vista de Hera que no espera a retirarse a su palacio, sino que quiere yacer con ella en aquel mismo sitio, protestándole que jamás había sentido tanto cariño por ella, ni cuando por primera vez se vieron sin saberlo sus padres(21) o cuando se refiere a la aventura de Ares y Afrodita, sorprendidos en las redes de Hefesto(22).

—De ninguna manera, por Zeus, me parece apto.

—En cambio —dije yo—, cuando nos pinta sus héroes hablando y obrando con espíritu invencible, entonces sí que es preciso admirarle y escucharle; como, por ejemplo, cuando dice:

Golpeándose el pecho, reprendió

a su corazón con estas palabras:

Mantente firme, corazón mío,

tú has soportado los más terribles males(23).

—Sí, ciertamente —asintió.

—Tampoco debe consentirse que nuestros hombres sean ansiosos de riqueza, ni que se dejen corromper por presentes.

—No, sin duda.

Que no se cante delante de ellos que

Los presentes ganan a los dioses,

ganan a los reyes venerables(24).

Y que no se tenga por sabio el consejo que Fénix, ayo de Aquiles, dio a éste, diciéndole que socorriera a los aqueos si le hacían presentes, y que les guardara resentimiento si no se los hacían(25). También nos negaremos a creer y confesar que Aquiles haya sido codicioso hasta el punto de recibir presentes de Agamenón(26), y de no entregar un cadáver hasta no haber recibido el rescate(27).

—Tales hechos no son dignos de alabanza —dijo.

—Me abstengo de decir por respeto a Homero que es una impiedad atribuir tales hechos a Aquiles y haber dado crédito a lo que otros antes que él habían publicado. Otro tanto digo de las amenazas que este héroe dirige a Apolo:

Tú me has engañado, arquero,

el más funesto de los dioses:

yo te castigaría si tuviera

poder para ello(28).

Y de su resistencia frente a un dios, el río Janto, contra el que estaba dispuesto a batirse(29); y de lo que dijo con ocasión de su cabellera, que estaba consagrada a otro río, el Esperqueo:

Al héroe Patroclo

quiero dar mi cabellera(30).

No es creíble que haya hecho eso cuando murió Patroclo, ni que haya arrastrado el cadáver de Héctor alrededor de la tumba de aquél(31), ni que haya inmolado y hecho quemar en la hoguera troyanos cautivos(32). Sostendremos que nada de esto es cierto, y no consentiremos que se haga creer a los nuestros que Aquiles, el hijo de una diosa y del sabio Peleo, y descendiente éste en tercer grado de Zeus(33), Aquiles, el discípulo del sapientísimo Quirón, haya tenido un alma tan desarreglada que se dejara dominar por dos pasiones tan contrarias, como lo son una miserable avaricia y un orgullo que le llevaba a despreciar a los dioses y a los hombres.

—Tienes razón —dijo.

—Guardémonos de creer eso y de permitir que se diga que Teseo, hijo de Poseidón, y Pirítoo, hijo de Zeus, hayan intentado los raptos sacrílegos que se les atribuyen(34), ni que ningún otro hijo de Zeus, ningún héroe se haya hecho culpable de las crueldades y de las impiedades de que les acusan falsamente ahora. Obliguemos a los poetas a reconocer que los héroes nunca han cometido semejantes acciones; o que, si las han cometido, ya no son descendientes de los dioses. Pero no les permitamos decir que son a la vez hijos de los dioses y culpables de semejantes crímenes, ni que persuadan a nuestros jóvenes de que los dioses han producido algo malo y que los héroes no valen más que los hombres. Porque, como dijimos antes, esta clase de discursos ofenden a la verdad y a la religión y ya hemos demostrado lo repugnante que es suponer que los dioses sean autores de mal alguno.

—¿Cómo no?

—Añadamos que tales discursos son muy peligrosos para los que los escuchan. En efecto, cualquier hombre justificará a sus ojos su propia maldad cuando esté persuadido de que no hace más que lo que han hecho los descendientes de los dioses, los parientes de Zeus, que tienen en la cima del Ida, en medio del puro éter, un altar en que hacen sacrificios a su padre, y que llevan aún en sus venas la sangre de los inmortales(35). Por todas estas razones desterremos de nuestra ciudad esta clase de ficciones, por temor de que engendren en la juventud una lamentable facilidad para cometer los mayores crímenes.

—Desde luego —dijo.

—Puesto que hemos comenzado a fijar —continué— los discursos que deben decirse y los que no, ¿hay todavía algunos de otra especie de que tengamos que hablar? Ya hemos tratado todo lo que hace relación a los dioses, a los genios, a los héroes y al Hades.

—Ciertamente.

—Aquí correspondería agregar lo relativo a los discursos que se refieren a los hombres, ¿no es así?

—Sin duda.

—Pero, mi querido amigo, en este momento esto es imposible.

—¿Por qué?

—Porque yo creo que diríamos que los poetas y los autores de fábulas se engañan gravemente con relación a los hombres cuando dicen que los malos son dichosos en su mayor parte y los hombres de bien desgraciados; que la injusticia es útil en tanto que permanece oculta y, por el contrario, que la justicia es dañosa al que la practica y útil a los demás. Les prohibiríamos semejantes discursos y les prescribiríamos que en lo sucesivo cantaran y relataran lo contrario, ¿no es verdad?

—Estoy persuadido de ello —dijo.

—Pero si confiesas que en esto tengo razón, ¿no deberé concluir que convienes en lo que se cuestiona desde el principio de esta conversación?

—Es justa tu reflexión —dijo.

—Por consiguiente, ¿reservaremos el tratar de cuáles son los discursos que deben admitirse respecto de los hombres para cuando hayamos descubierto lo que es la justicia y si es ventajoso en sí ser justo, sea uno o no tenido por tal?

—Tienes mucha razón —dijo.

386 — Voilà donc apparemment, pour ce qui concerne les dieux, dis-je, le genre de choses qu’il faut faire entendre à ces hommes, et celles qu’il faut leur interdire d’entendre, dès leur enfance, si l’on veut qu’ils honorent dieux aussi bien que parents, et fassent grand cas de leur amitié mutuelle.

— Oui, je crois moi aussi, dit-il, que notre point de vue est le bon.

— Mais que faire, si l’on veut qu’ils soient virils ? Ne faut-il pas leur tenir les propos rnêmes capables de les amener à craindre la mort le moins possible ? Crois-tu b qu’on puisse devenir viril tout en conservant en soi cette crainte ?

— Par Zeus, dit-il, non, je ne le pense pas,

— Alors dis-moi : celui qui croit que les choses de l’Hadès existent, et qu’elles sont effrayantes, penses-tu qu’il sera exempt de la peur de la mort et que dans les combats, il préférera la mort à la soumission et à l’esclavage ?

— Non, nullement.

— Il faut donc, apparemment, que pour ces histoires-là elles aussi, nous contrôlions ceux qui entreprennent de les raconter, et que nous leur demandions de ne pas dénigrer, de façon aussi absolue, les choses de l’Hadès, mais plutôt de les vanter, puisque ce qu’ils disent n’est ni vrai, ni profitable à des hommes dont on veut qu’ils soient aptes au combat.

— Il le faut à coup sûr, dit-il.

— Nous effacerons donc, dis-je, en commençant par ce passage de l’épopée, tous les passages du même genre : J’aimerais mieux être un aide-laboureur, aux gages D’un paysan sans-terre, menant une pauvre vie, Plutôt que de régner sur tous les morts qui ont péri ... et ceci : d ... apparaisse aux mortels et aux immortels la demeure effrayante, ténébreuse, dont ont horreur même les dieux... et: hélas ! c’est bien vrai qu’il existe, même dans les demeures de l’Hadès, un souffle et une image, mais qu’en sont tout à fait absentes les forces vitales... et ceci : lui seul a du souffle, tandis que les ombres volettent... et: le souffle, s’envolant de ses membres, s’en alla vers l’Hadès, " en gémissant sur son destin, abandonnant virilité et jeunesse 387 et ceci : ...le souffle sous la terre, pareil à une fumée, s’en est allé en poussant des cris... et : comme lorsque des chauves-souris dans le fond d’un antre divin s’envolent en criant, chaque fois que l’une d’elles se détache de la file accrochée à la roche, où elles se tiennent les unes aux autres, ainsi les âmes, poussant des cris, s’en allaient ensemble... b Ces passages, et tous ceux qui leur ressemblent, nous prierons Homère et les autres poètes de ne pas se fâcher que nous les raturions, non pas comme non poétiques ou désagréables à entendre par la masse, mais parce que plus ils sont poétiques, moins il faut les faire entendre aux enfants et aux hommes dont on veut qu’ils soient des hommes libres, plus effrayés par l’esclavage que par la mort.

— Oui, absolument.

— Il faut donc rejeter encore tous les noms effrayants et terrifiants qui entourent ces choses, les « Cocytes » et les « Styx » c et les « gens d’en bas » et les « spectres » et tous les autres de ce type, capables, quand on les prononce, de donner le frisson à tous ceux qui les entendent. Peut-être ont-ils du bon à quelque autre égard ; mais "nous, nous craignons pour nos gardiens qu’après un tel frisson ils ne s’enfièvrent et ne s’attendrissent plus qu’il ne Ie faudrait.

— Et nous avons raison de le craindre, dit-il.

— Il faut donc les supprimer ?

— Oui.

— Et c’est un registre opposé à ceux-là qu’il faut développer, et présenter dans la poésie ?

— Oui, c’est bien visible.

— Nous supprimerons donc les gémissements d et les plaintes des guerriers célèbres ?

— C’est nécessaire, dit-il, autant que l’étaient les conclusions précédentes.

— Examine alors, dis-je, si nous avons raison d’opérer cette suppression, ou non. Nous affirmons donc qu’un homme digne de ce nom considérera que, pour l’homme digne de ce nom dont il est le camarade, mourir n’est pas chose effrayante.

— Oui, c’est ce que nous affirmons.

— Il n’irait donc pas gémir sur lui comme sur quelqu’un à qui est arrivé quelque chose d’effrayant.

— Certes pas.

— Mais nous disons aussi ceci : c’est qu’un tel homme est celui qui peut le plus se suffire à lui-même pour accéder à la vie bonne, et qu’à la différence e des autres il a très peu besoin d’autrui.

— C’est vrai, dit-il.

— C’est donc pour lui, parmi tous les hommes, qu’il est le moins terrible d’être privé d’un fils, d’un frère, ou de richesses, ou de quelque autre des choses de ce genre.

— Oui, sans nul doute.

— Donc c’est aussi lui qui gémit le moins, et qui supporte le plus calmement possible d’être frappé par un tel malheur.

— Oui, de loin.

— Nous aurions donc raison de supprimer les lamentations rituelles des guerriers de grand renom, et de les attribuer à des femmes, et encore pas à celles qui ont de la gravité, et 388 aux hommes dépourvus de valeur, afin qu’ils nous servent h dissuader ceux que nous prétendons élever pour la garde du pays de se comporter comme eux.

— Oui, nous aurions raison, dit-il.

— À nouveau, alors, nous demanderons à Homère et aux autres poètes de ne pas présenter un Achille, enfant d’une déesse, tantôt allongé sur le flanc, tantôt au contraire sur le dos, et tantôt sur le ventre...et tantôt se tenant droit et errant, l’âme agitée, sur le rivage de la mer inféconde b ou "de ses deux mains prenant la poussière noircie et se la versant sur la tête" , ou encore pleurant et gémissant dans toute la variété des circonstances où ce poète l’a placé ; ou encore Priam, proche des dieux par sa naissnace, adressant des litanies et ... se roulant dans l’ordure, nommant par son nom chaque guerrier. Et, bien plus encore, nous demanderons qu’ils ne montrent pas dans leurs poèmes les divinités gémissant et disant : c hélas ! que je suis malheureuse ! hélas ! malheureuse d’avoir enfanté un homme exceptionnel... "Et en tout cas, s’ils le font pour certains dieux, qu’ils n’aient pas l’audace de proposer une imitation du plus grand des dieux si peu ressemblante qu’elle lui fasse dire : hélas ! je vois de mes yeux un guerrier que j’aime chassé par la ville, et mon cœur s’afflige et: malheur ! malheur de moi ! que Sarpédon, mon préfèré parmi les guerriers d son sort soit d’être abattu par Patrocle fils de Ménoitios.

Car, mon cher Adimante, si nos jeunes entendaient de telles choses en les prenant au sérieux, au lieu d’en rire comme de sottises, on pourrait difficilement imaginer que l’un d’eux, étant un humain lui-même, juge son propre comportement indigne, et se fasse des reproches au cas où il lui arriverait précisément de dire ou de faire quelque chose de semblable ; sans en éprouver de honte et sans chercher à s’endurcir, aux moindres souffrances il chanterait force lamentations rituelles et pousserait force gémissements e .

— Tu dis tout à fait vrai, répondit-il.

— Or il ne le faut pas, comme l’argument à l’instant nous l’a fait comprendre. C’est ce dont il faut être persuadé, jusqu’à ce que quelqu’un nous persuade par un argument meilleur.

— Non, c’est vrai, il ne le faut pas.

— Inversement il ne faut pas qu’ils soient non plus enclins au rire. Car, en quelque sorte, lorsqu’on se laisse aller à un rire puissant, puissante est aussi la modification intérieure que cela tend à provoquer en vous. "

— Oui, c’est bien mon avis, dit-il.

— Si donc quelqu’un représente des hommes de quelque valeur dominés par le rire, 389 il ne faut pas l’accepter, et bien moins encore s’il représente des dieux.

— Oui, bien moins, dit-il.

— Nous n’accepterons donc pas non plus d’Homère des passages de ce genre, à propos des dieux : Et un rire inextinguible jaillit parmi les dieux bienheureux, A la vue d’Héphaistos s’affairant par la salle ! Il ne faut pas les accepter, selon ton argument.

— Si tu veux me l’attribuer ! dit-il. Non, en effet, b il ne faut pas les accepter.

— Mais c’est qu’il faut aussi faire grand cas de la vérité. Car si tout à l’heure nos arguments étaient corrects, et si réellement le faux est inutile aux dieux, tandis qu’aux hommes il est utile comme une espèce de drogue, il est visible que c’est quelque chose qu’il faut confier aux médecins, et que les particuliers ne doivent pas y toucher.

— C’est visible, dit-il.

— C’est alors aux dirigeants de la cité, plus qu’à quiconque, qu’il revient de dire le faux, à l’intention des ennemis ou des citoyens, dans l’intérêt de la cité ; à tous les autres, il est interdit d’y toucher. Au contraire, c pour un particulier, dire le faux, en s’adressant aux dirigeants, nous affirmerons que c’est une faute égale, plus grave même, que le serait, pour un malade s’adressant au médecin, ou pour qui fait un exercice, quand il parle à un maître, de ne pas dire le vrai sur l’état de son propre corps, ou bien, quand on s’adresse à un pilote, de ne pas lui rapporter l’état réel du navire et des matelots, à savoir à quel point de la manœuvre en est le matelot lui-même, ou tel de ses camarades.

— C’est tout à fait vrai, dit-il. "

— Alors si le dirigeant prend quelqu’un d’autre sur le fait, en train de dire le faux d dans la cité, ...un de ceux qui sont artisans publics devin, médecin des maladies, ou fabricant de poutres ... il le châtiera comme coupable d’introduire une façon de faire subversive et destructrice pour une cité, comme elle le serait pour un navire.

— Oui, dit-il, du moins si des actes viennent compléter ses paroles.

— Mais dis-moi : nos jeunes gens n’auront-ils pas besoin de maîtrise de soi ?

— Bien sûr que si.

— Or l’essentiel de la maîtrise de soi, quand il s’agit de la masse, ne consiste-t-il pas à être soumis aux dirigeants, tout en dirigeant soi-même les e plaisirs de la boisson, les plaisirs d’Aphrodite, et ceux de la nourriture ?

— Si, tel est bien mon avis.

— Alors, je crois, nous affirmerons que c’est là bien parler, lorsque par exemple, chez Homère, Diomède dit : Paix ! l’ami, et silence ! obéi à ma voix et ce qui s’ensuit : Les Achéens avancent, respirant la fureur... ...muets, craignant leurs chefs "et les autres passages de ce genre.

— Oui, c’est bien parler.

— Mais quoi ? Un passage comme : Suc à vin ! a il de chien et cœur de cerf ! 390 et ce qui vient ensuite, est-ce là un propos recommandable, et de même pour toutes les sottises juvéniles qu’en prose ou en poésie, un des simples particuliers lance à ses dirigeants ?

— Non, ce ne l’est pas. Non, en effet, car je ne crois pas que ce soient choses à faire entendre aux jeunes — en tout cas pour les conduire à la maîtrise de soi. Que par contre elles procurent quelque autre plaisir, rien là d’étonnant. Que t’en semble ?

— Comme à toi, dit-il.

— Mais représenter le plus sage des guerriers, en train de dire que ce qu’il y a de plus beau, à son avis, c’est ...d’être à des tables chargées b de viandes et de pain, quand l’échansondans le cratère puise le vin, et le verse dans chaque coupe, est-ce, à ton avis, ce qu’il faut faire entendre à un jeune qu’on veut amener à la maîtrise de soi ? Ou ceci : mais mourir de faim, c’est subir le sort le plus lamentable ? "Ou la scène où Zeus, alors que les autres dieux et les hommes dormaient, seul à être resté éveillé, oublia sans hésiter c — à cause de son désir des plaisirs d’Aphrodite — tout ce qu’il avait délibéré, et fut à ce point bouleversé, à la vue d’Héra, qu’il ne consentit plus à attendre d’être allé dans le palais, mais voulut sur place, à terre, s’unir à elle, et lui dit être possédé par un désir plus fort même que lorsque pour la première fois ils s’étaient connus, passant inaperçus de leurs parents? Ou la scène du lien jeté sur Arès et sur Aphrodite par Héphaïstos dans une situation du même genre?

— Non, par Zeus, dit-il, cela ne me paraît pas approprié.

— En revanche, d dis-je, si jamais des exhortations à tenir bon face à toutes choses sont lancées et mises en pratique par des guerriers renommés, il faut les regarder et les écouter, comme dans ce passage : mais, en frappant sa poitrine, il fit en paroles des reproches à son cœur : Supporte cela, mon cœur ! Tu as supporté chiennerie pire.

— Oui, certainement, dit-il.

— Il ne faut certes pas non plus laisser les guerriers accepter de dons ni avoir le goût des richesses. e — Non, nullement. — Il ne faut alors pas non plus leur chanter que les dons persuadent les dieux, les dons persuadent les rois vénérables ni faire l’éloge du pédagogue d’Achille, Phénix, en pré- tendant qu’il parlait avec mesure quand il lui conseillait, s’il recevait des présents, d’aller défendre les Achéens, mais de ne pas renoncer à sa colère sans en avoir reçu . Et de même nous ne jugerons pas digne d’Achille lui-même, et nous refuserons, qu’il ait le goût des richesses au point d’accepter des présents d’Agamemnon, et de laisser emporter le cadavre après en avoir reçu le prix, 391 mais de ne pas y consentir avant.

— Non, il n’est certes pas juste, dit-il, de louer de tels passages.

— Et c’est parce qu’il s’agit d’Homère, repris-je, que j’hésite à dire qu’il est impie d’accuser Achille de cela, ou de s’en laisser persuader quand ce sont d’autres qui le disent ; comme encore de croire qu’il aurait dit à Apollon : Tu m’as nui, toi qui agis au loin, ô le plus exécrable des dieux, Ah ! je m’en vengerais, si j’en avais la puissance ! " b et qu’envers le fleuve, qui est un dieu, il se serait comporté en rebelle et aurait été prêt à le combattre ; et encore que parlant des cheveux consacrés à l’autre fleuve, au Sperchios, il aurait dit : "c’est au héros Patrocle que je veux offrir ici ma chevelure à emporter" — Patrocle qui était un cadavre —, et qu’i) l’aurait fait, non, il ne faut pas le croire. Et les scènes où l’on traîne Hector autour du tombeau de Patrocle, et celle où l’on égorge sur le bûcher des prisonniers, tout cela nous déclarerons que ce n’est pas véridique, et nous ne laisserons pas les c nôtres croire qu’Achille, qui était l’enfant d’une déesse et de Pélée, homme très maître de lui et de la troisième génération à partir de Zeus, et qui avait été élevé par le très sage Chiron, ait été possédé d’un tel trouble intérieur qu’il ait pu avoir en lui-même ces deux maladies opposées l’une à l’autre : une servilité mêlée de cupidité, et inversement de l’arrogance à )’égard des dieux et des hommes.

— Eh bien ne croyons pas, dis-je, et ne laissons pas non plus dire, que Thésée fils de Poséidon, et Pirithoüs d fils de Zeus, se soient ainsi lancés comme on le dit dans de terribles opérations de rapt, ni que quelque autre enfant d’un dieu, quelque héros, ait osé accomplir des actes aussi terribles et impies que ceux qu’on rapporte aujourd’hui, faussement, à leur sujet. Mais contraignons les poètes, soit à ne pas leur attribuer ces actes, soit à ne pas les dire enfants des dieux ; qu’ils ne prétendent pas les deux à la "fois, et n’entreprennent pas de persuader nos jeunes que les dieux engendrent le mal, et que les héros ne sont en rien meilleurs que les hommes. Car, et c’est e ce que nous disions précédemment, cela n’est ni conforme à la piété, ni vrai. Et nous avons démontré, n’est-ce pas, que des dieux, il est impossible que provienne le mal.

— Comment pourrait-il venir d’eux ?

— Et en plus, de tels récits sont nuisibles à ceux qui les écoutent. Car tout homme se pardonnera d’être méchant, s’il est persuadé que c’est bien là ce que font et faisaient aussi ceux qui sont proches de la semence des dieux, ceux qui sont proches de Zeus, qui ont sur la colline de l’Ida un autel de Zeus paternel, dans l’éther et en qui le sang des êtres divins n’est pas encore éteint C’est pourquoi il faut mettre un terme à ce genre d’histoires, pour qu’elles ne fassent pas naître 392 chez nos jeunes une grande propension à la méchanceté.

— Oui, parfaitement, dit-il.

— Quelle espèce nous reste-t-il alors à examiner, dis-je, parmi les discours, pour déterminer lesquels il faut tenir et lesquels interdire ? Car nous avons expliqué comment il faut parler des dieux, des êtres divins, des héros, et des choses de l’Hadès.

— Oui, exactement.

— Nous resterait alors encore l’espèce des discours concernant les hommes ?

— Oui, on le voit bien.

— Mais c’est qu’il est impossible, mon ami, que nous donnions des prescriptions sur ce point pour l’instant. "

— Comment cela ?

— Parce que, je crois, nous dirons que sans aucun doute les poètes comme les compositeurs de récits parlent mal b de ce qui est essentiel pour les humains, quand ils prétendent qu’il y a beaucoup d’hommes injustes heureux, et de justes malheureux ; que commettre l’injustice est profitable, si cela passe inaperçu, et que la justice est un bien pour autrui, mais un détriment pour soi-même ; et nous leur interdirons de raconter de pareilles choses, en leur prescrivant de chanter et de raconter des histoires orientées en sens inverse. Ne le crois-tu pas ?

— Si, j’en suis bien persuadé, dit-il.

— Or si tu m’accordes que j’ai raison de dire cela, je pourrai affirmer que tu es tombé d’accord sur ce qui est depuis un certain temps déjà l’objet de notre recherche ?

— Oui, dit-il, tu as raison de faire cette supposition. c — Par conséquent nous ne pourrons accorder que tels sont les discours qu’il faut tenir sur les humains, que lorsque nous aurons trouvé quel genre de chose est la justice, et que c’est une chose qui profite par nature à celui qui la possède, qu’il donne l’impression d’être juste, ou non?

Such, then, I said, are our principles of theology — some tales are to be told, and others are not to be told to our disciples from their youth upward, if we mean them to honor the gods and their parents, and to value friendship with one another.

Yes ; and I think that our principles are right, he said.

But if they are to be courageous, must they not learn other lessons beside these, and lessons of such a kind as will take away the fear of death ? Can any man be courageous who has the fear of death in him ?

Certainly not, he said.

And can he be fearless of death, or will he choose death in battle rather than defeat and slavery, who believes the world below to be real and terrible ?

Impossible.

Then we must assume a control over the narrators of this class of tales as well as over the others, and beg them not simply to revile, but rather to commend the world below, intimating to them that their descriptions are untrue, and will do harm to our future warriors.

That will be our duty, he said.

Then, I said, we shall have to obliterate many obnoxious passages, beginning with the verses

“I would rather be a serf on the land of a poor and portionless man than rule over all the dead who have come to naught.”

We must also expunge the verse which tells us how Pluto feared

“Lest the mansions grim and squalid which the gods abhor should be seen both of mortals and immortals.”

And again :

“O heavens ! verily in the house of Hades there is soul and ghostly form but no mind at all !”

Again of Tiresias :

“(To him even after death did Persephone grant mind,) that he alone should be wise ; but the other souls are flitting shades.”

Again :

“The soul flying from the limbs had gone to Hades, lamentng her fate, leaving manhood and youth.”

Again :

“And the soul, with shrilling cry, passed like smoke beneath the earth.”

And,

“As bats in hollow of mystic cavern, whenever any of them has dropped out of the string and falls from the rock, fly shrilling and cling to one another, so did they with shrilling cry hold together as they moved.”

And we must beg Homer and the other poets not to be angry if we strike out these and similar passages, not because they are unpoetical, or unattractive to the popular ear, but because the greater the poetical charm of them, the less are they meet for the ears of boys and men who are meant to be free, and who should fear slavery more than death.

Undoubtedly.

Also we shall have to reject all the terrible and appalling names which describe the world below — Cocytus and Styx, ghosts under the earth, and sapless shades, and any similar words of which the very mention causes a shudder to pass through the inmost soul of him who hears them. I do not say that these horrible stories may not have a use of some kind ; but there is a danger that the nerves of our guardians may be rendered too excitable and effeminate by them.

There is a real danger, he said. Then we must have no more of them.

True.

Another and a nobler strain must be composed and sung by us.

Clearly.

And shall we proceed to get rid of the weepings and wailings of famous men ?

They will go with the rest.

But shall we be right in getting rid of them ? Reflect : our principle is that the good man will not consider death terrible to any other good man who is his comrade.

Yes ; that is our principle.

And therefore he will not sorrow for his departed friend as though he had suffered anything terrible ?

He will not.

Such an one, as we further maintain, is sufficient for himself and his own happiness, and therefore is least in need of other men.

True, he said.

And for this reason the loss of a son or brother, or the deprivation of fortune, is to him of all men least terrible.

Assuredly.

And therefore he will be least likely to lament, and will bear with the greatest equanimity any misfortune of this sort which may befall him.

Yes, he will feel such a misfortune far less than another.

Then we shall be right in getting rid of the lamentations of famous men, and making them over to women (and not even to women who are good for anything), or to men of a baser sort, that those who are being educated by us to be the defenders of their country may scorn to do the like.

That will be very right.

Then we will once more entreat Homer and the other poets not to depict Achilles, who is the son of a goddess, first lying on his side, then on his back, and then on his face ; then starting up and sailing in a frenzy along the shores of the barren sea ; now taking the sooty ashes in both his hands and pouring them over his head, or weeping and wailing in the various modes which Homer has delineated. Nor should he describe Priam, the kinsman of the gods, as praying and beseeching,

“Rolling in the dirt, calling each man loudly by his name.”

Still more earnestly will we beg of him at all events not to introduce the gods lamenting and saying,

“Alas ! my misery ! Alas ! that I bore the bravest to my sorrow.”

But if he must introduce the gods, at any rate let him not dare so completely to misrepresent the greatest of the gods, as to make him say —

“O heavens ! with my eyes verily I behold a dear friend of mine chased round and round the city, and my heart is sorrowful.”

Or again :

“Woe is me that I am fated to have Sarpedon, dearest of men to me, subdued at the hands of Patroclus the son of Menoetius.”

For if, my sweet Adeimantus, our youth seriously listen to such unworthy representations of the gods, instead of laughing at them as they ought, hardly will any of them deem that he himself, being but a man, can be dishonored by similar actions ; neither will he rebuke any inclination which may arise in his mind to say and do the like. And instead of having any shame or self-control, he will be always whining and lamenting on slight occasions.

Yes, he said, that is most true.

Yes, I replied ; but that surely is what ought not to be, as the argument has just proved to us ; and by that proof we must abide until it is disproved by a better.

It ought not to be.

Neither ought our guardians to be given to laughter. For a fit of laughter which has been indulged to excess almost always produces a violent reaction.

So I believe.

Then persons of worth, even if only mortal men, must not be represented as overcome by laughter, and still less must such a representation of the gods be allowed.

Still less of the gods, as you say, he replied.

Then we shall not suffer such an expression to be used about the gods as that of Homer when he describes how

“Inextinguishable laughter arose among the blessed gods, when they saw Hephaestus bustling about the mansion.”

On your views, we must not admit them.

On my views, if you like to father them on me ; that we must not admit them is certain.

Again, truth should be highly valued ; if, as we were saying, a lie is useless to the gods, and useful only as a medicine to men, then the use of such medicines should be restricted to physicians ; private individuals have no business with them.

Clearly not, he said.

Then if anyone at all is to have the privilege of lying, the rulers of the State should be the persons ; and they, in their dealings either with enemies or with their own citizens, may be allowed to lie for the public good. But nobody else should meddle with anything of the kind ; and although the rulers have this privilege, for a private man to lie to them in return is to be deemed a more heinous fault than for the patient or the pupil of a gymnasium not to speak the truth about his own bodily illnesses to the physician or to the trainer, or for a sailor not to tell the captain what is happening about the ship and the rest of the crew, and how things are going with himself or his fellow-sailors.

Most true, he said.

If, then, the ruler catches anybody beside himself lying in the State,

“Any of the craftsmen, whether he be priest or physician or carpenter,”

he will punish him for introducing a practice which is equally subversive and destructive of ship or State.

Most certainly, he said, if our idea of the State is ever carried out.

In the next place our youth must be temperate ?

Certainly.

Are not the chief elements of temperance, speaking generally, obedience to commanders and self-control in sensual pleasures ?

True.

Then we shall approve such language as that of Diomede in Homer,

“Friend sit still and obey my word,”

and the verses which follow,

“The Greeks marched breathing prowess,”

“...in silent awe of their leaders.”

and other sentiments of the same kind.

We shall.

What of this line,

“O heavy with wine, who hast the eyes of a dog and the heart of a stag,”

and of the words which follow ? Would you say that these, or any similar impertinences which private individuals are supposed to address to their rulers, whether in verse or prose, are well or ill spoken ?

They are ill spoken.

They may very possibly afford some amusement, but they do not conduce to temperance. And therefore they are likely to do harm to our young men — you would agree with me there ?

Yes.

And then, again, to make the wisest of men say that nothing in his opinion is more glorious than

“When the tables are full of bread and meat, and the cup-bearer carries round wine which he draws from the bowl and pours into the cups ;”

is it fit or conducive to temperance for a young man to hear such words ? or the verse

“The saddest of fates is to die and meet destiny from hunger” ?

What would you say again to the tale of Zeus, who, while other gods and men were asleep and he the only person awake, lay devising plans, but forgot them all in a moment through his lust, and was so completely overcome at the sight of Here that he would not even go into the hut, but wanted to lie with her on the ground, declaring that he had never been in such a state of rapture before, even when they first met one another,

“Without the knowledge of their parents”

or that other tale of how Hephaestus, because of similar goings on, cast a chain around Ares and Aphrodite ?

Indeed, he said, I am strongly of opinion that they ought not to hear that sort of thing.

But any deeds of endurance which are done or told by famous men, these they ought to see and hear ; as, for example, what is said in the verses,

“He smote his breast, and thus reproached his heart,

Endure, my heart ; far worse hast thou endured !”

Certainly, he said.

In the next place, we must not let them be receivers of gifts or lovers of money.

Certainly not.

Neither must we sing to them of

“Gifts persuading gods, and persuading reverend kings.”

Neither is Phoenix, the tutor of Achilles, to be approved or deemed to have given his pupil good counsel when he told him that he should take the gifts of the Greeks and assist them ; but that without a gift he should not lay aside his anger. Neither will we believe or acknowledge Achilles himself to have been such a lover of money that he took Agamemnon’s gifts, or that when he had received payment he restored the dead body of Hector, but that without payment he was unwilling to do so.

Undoubtedly, he said, these are not sentiments which can be approved.

Loving Homer as I do, I hardly like to say that in attributing these feelings to Achilles, or in believing that they are truly attributed to him, he is guilty of downright impiety. As little can I believe the narrative of his insolence to Apollo, where he says,

“Thou hast wronged me, O Far-darter, most abominable of deities. Verily I would be even with thee, if I had only the power ;”

or his insubordination to the river-god, on whose divinity he is ready to lay hands ; or his offerings to the dead Patroclus of his own hair, which had been previously dedicated to the other river-god Spercheius, and that he actually performed this vow ; or that he dragged Hector round the tomb of Patroclus, and slaughtered the captives at the pyre ; of all this I cannot believe that he was guilty, any more than I can allow our citizens to believe that he, the wise Cheiron’s pupil, the son of a goddess and of Peleus who was the gentlest of men and third in descent from Zeus, was so disordered in his wits as to be at one time the slave of two seemingly inconsistent passions, meanness, not untainted by avarice, combined with overweening contempt of gods and men.

You are quite right, he replied.

And let us equally refuse to believe, or allow to be repeated, the tale of Theseus, son of Poseidon, or of Peirithous, son of Zeus, going forth as they did to perpetrate a horrid rape ; or of any other hero or son of a god daring to do such impious and dreadful things as they falsely ascribe to them in our day : and let us further compel the poets to declare either that these acts were done by them, or that they were not the sons of God ; both in the same breath they shall not be permitted to affirm. We will not have them trying to persuade our youth that the gods are the authors of evil, and that heroes are no better than men — sentiments which, as we were saying, are neither pious nor true, for we have already proved that evil cannot come from the gods.

Assuredly not. And, further, they are likely to have a bad effect on those who hear them ; for everybody will begin to excuse his own vices when he is convinced that similar wickednesses are always being perpetrated by

“The kindred of the gods, the relatives of Zeus, whose ancestral altar, the altar of Zeus, is aloft in air on the peak of Ida,”

and who have

“the blood of deities yet flowing in their veins.”

And therefore let us put an end to such tales, lest they engender laxity of morals among the young.

By all means, he replied.

But now that we are determining what classes of subjects are or are not to be spoken of, let us see whether any have been omitted by us. The manner in which gods and demigods and heroes and the world below should be treated has been already laid down.

Very true.

And what shall we say about men ? That is clearly the remaining portion of our subject.

Clearly so.

But we are not in a condition to answer this question at present, my friend.

Why not ?

Because, if I am not mistaken, we shall have to say that about men ; poets and story-tellers are guilty of making the gravest misstatements when they tell us that wicked men are often happy, and the good miserable ; and that injustice is profitable when undetected, but that justice is a man’s own loss and another’s gain — these things we shall forbid them to utter, and command them to sing and say the opposite.

To be sure we shall, he replied.

But if you admit that I am right in this, then I shall maintain that you have implied the principle for which we have been all along contending.

I grant the truth of your inference.

That such things are or are not to be said about men is a question which we cannot determine until we have discovered what justice is, and how naturally advantageous to the possessor, whether he seem to be just or not.

Or that Jupiter, through desire of venereal pleasures, easily forgetting all those things which he alone awake (390c) revolved in his mind, whilst other Gods and men were asleep, was so struck, on seeing Juno, as not even to be willing to come into the house, but wanted to embrace her on the ground; and at the same time declaring that he is possessed with such desire, as exceeded what he felt on their first connection with each other,
