—Basta lo dicho sobre los discursos, y pasemos a la dicción. De esta manera habremos tratado a fondo lo que debe ser materia de los discursos y la forma que conviene darle.

—No entiendo eso que dices —replicó Adimanto.

—Pues hay que entenderlo —respondí—. Veamos si me entenderás mejor de otra manera. Todo lo que dicen los poetas y los autores de fábulas, ¿es otra cosa que una narración de las cosas pasadas, presentes o futuras?

—¿Qué otra cosa puede ser? —dijo.

—Para ello, ¿no emplean o una narración simple, o una imitativa, o una compuesta de una y otra?

—Te suplico que te expliques más claramente también en esto —dijo.

—Soy un maestro singular, a lo que parece, porque no puedo hacerme entender —exclamé—. Voy a ver, siguiendo el ejemplo de los que no tienen facilidad en explicarse, si puedo hacerte comprender mi pensamiento presentándotelo, no en general, sino en ejemplos sucesivos. Respóndeme. ¿Sabes los primeros versos de la Ilíada, donde Homero refiere que Crises fue en busca de Agamenón para suplicarle que le entregara su hija, y que como Agamenón se negara con aspereza, él se retiró y conjuró al dios para que enviara males a los aqueos?

—Lo sé.

—Sabes también que hasta en estos versos:

Imploraba a todos los aqueos,

y sobre todo a los dos hijos de Atreo,

jefes de pueblos(36),

el poeta habla en su nombre, y no trata de hacernos creer que sea otro el que habla y no él. Pero después de estos versos habla en nombre de Crises y emplea todo su arte para persuadirnos de que no es Homero el que habla sino el anciano sacerdote. La mayor parte de las relaciones de lo ocurrido en Ilión e Ítaca y de la Odisea entera son de este género.

—Es cierto —dijo.

—Ahora bien, ¿no es siempre una narración, ya hable el poeta por sí o ya lo haga por boca de otros?

—¿Cómo no ha de serlo?

—Y cuando habla por boca de otros, ¿no diremos que trata de conformarse todo lo posible con el lenguaje de aquel en cuyo nombre habla?

—Sí lo diremos.

—Ahora bien, asimilarse uno mismo a otro por el gesto o por la palabra, ¿no es imitarle?

—¿Qué, si no?

—Por lo tanto, en estos casos las narraciones, tanto del poeta considerado como de los demás, son narraciones imitativas.

—En efecto.

—Por el contrario, si el poeta no se ocultase nunca bajo la persona de otro, todo su poema y su narración serían simples y sin imitación; y para que no me digas que no comprendes cómo puede hacerse esto, voy a explicártelo. Si Homero, después de haber dicho que Crises había venido al campo con el rescate de su hija y que había suplicado a los aqueos, sobre todo a los dos reyes, hubiera continuado la relación como tal Homero, y no como Crises, reconocerás que no sería ya una imitación sino una narración sencilla. He aquí, por ejemplo, cómo se hubiera explicado; y me serviré de la prosa, porque no soy poeta:

«El sacerdote, al llegar al campamento, suplicó a los dioses que permitieran a los griegos tomar a Troya, y que les concedieran una vuelta feliz. Al mismo tiempo conjuró a los griegos, por respeto al dios, a que le devolvieran a su hija y aceptaran su rescate. Todos los griegos llenos de respeto por este anciano, consintieron en su demanda; pero Agamenón se levantó contra él, le mandó que se retirara y que no se presentara jamás en su presencia, no fuese que ni el cetro ni las ínfulas del dios le librasen de su cólera. Que antes de entregar la hija, ella envejecería con él en Argos; que se marchase y no le irritase más, si quería volver sano y salvo a su casa. El anciano se retiró temblando y sin decir nada. Luego que se alejó del campamento dirigió una súplica a Apolo, invocándole con todos sus nombres, recordándole todo lo que había hecho por agradarle, ya construyendo templos, ya inmolándole víctimas escogidas; y en recompensa de su piedad le suplicó que lanzara sus flechas sobre los aqueos, para vengar las lágrimas que le habían hecho derramar».

A esto llamo yo una narración simple y sin imitación.

—Lo entiendo —dijo.

—Comprende igualmente —añadí— que hay una especie de narración que es opuesta a ésta. Es aquella en la que el poeta, suprimiendo todo lo que intercala por su cuenta en los discursos de aquellos a quienes hace hablar, sólo deja el diálogo.

—Comprendo también eso —dijo—. Esta narración es la propia de la tragedia.

—Justamente —dije—. Creo ahora haberte hecho entender lo que no comprendías al principio; a saber, que en la poesía y en toda ficción la primera clase de narración es imitativa y, como acabas de decir, pertenece a la tragedia y a la comedia. La segunda se hace en nombre del poeta, y la verás empleada en los ditirambos. La tercera es una mezcla de una y otra, y nos servimos de ella en la epopeya y en otras cosas, ¿me entiendes?

—Sí, entiendo lo que querías decir —asintió.

—Recuerda también lo que dijimos antes: que después de haber establecido lo que se debe decir, nos faltaba examinar el modo de decirlo.

—Lo recuerdo.

—Quería decirte que necesitábamos discutir juntos si hemos de dejar a los poetas la libertad de servirse de narraciones puramente imitativas o de unas y otras a la vez, y qué reglas les prescribiremos para esta clase de narraciones, o si les prohibiremos toda imitación.

—Adivino tu intención —dijo—: quieres ver si admitiremos o no la tragedia y la comedia en nuestro Estado.

—Quizá —dije yo—, y acaso algo más. En este momento no lo sé aún. Pero iré adonde el soplo de la argumentación me lleve.

—Bien dicho —señaló.

—Examina ahora, mi querido Adimanto, si será conveniente que nuestros guardianes sean imitadores o no. ¿No resulta, de lo que antes dijimos, que cada uno sólo puede hacer bien una sola cosa, y que si se aplica a muchas no conseguirá ser bien considerado en ninguna?

—¿Cómo no va a ser así?

—¿No sucede lo mismo con respecto a la imitación, que un hombre solo no puede imitar muchas cosas tan bien como una sola?

—No, ciertamente.

—Menos podría aplicarse a una función importante y al mismo tiempo imitar muchas cosas y sobresalir en la imitación, cuando se ve que en dos cosas, que tanto se dan la mano como la comedia y la tragedia, es difícil que un mismo hombre sobresalga en ambas. ¿No las llamabas antes imitaciones?

—Sí, y tienes razón en decir que no se puede sobresalir a la vez en estos dos géneros.

—Tampoco se ve que un mismo hombre pueda ser a la vez rapsodista y actor.

—Es cierto.

—Los mismos actores no son siquiera buenos por igual para lo trágico y para lo cómico. Y, sin embargo, estos dos géneros no son más que imitaciones, ¿no?

—Lo son.

—Es más, me parece, Adimanto, que las facultades del hombre se dividen con relación a aplicaciones más limitadas aún; de suerte que le es imposible imitar bien muchas cosas o hacer seriamente las cosas que reproduce por la imitación.

—Nada más cierto —dijo.

—Si nos atenemos, pues, al primer principio establecido, según el cual nuestros guardianes, libres de toda otra ocupación, deben ser únicamente artesanos hábiles de la libertad del Estado por todos los medios propios a este efecto, no les conviene hacer ni imitar ninguna otra cosa; o si imitan algo, que sea, desde niños, aquello que puede conducirles a su fin, es decir, el valor, la templanza, la piedad, la grandeza de alma y las demás virtudes; pero que no imiten nada que sea bajo y vergonzoso, no sea que se hagan tales como los que imitan. ¿No has observado que la imitación, cuando se contrae el hábito desde la juventud, trasciende a las costumbres y a la naturaleza, modificando el aspecto corporal, la voz y el pensamiento?

—Eso sucede comúnmente —dijo él.

—No consintamos, pues —seguí—, que los que son objeto de nuestro cuidado y para quienes es un deber llegar a ser hombres de bien, se complazcan, siendo varones, en imitar a una mujer, sea joven o vieja, querellosa para con su marido o llena de orgullo, que pretenda igualarse a los dioses, jactanciosa de su supuesta felicidad, o que se abandone en la desgracia a quejas y lamentaciones. Menos imitarán a la enferma, a la enamorada o a la que está con los dolores del parto(37).

—De ningún modo —dijo él.

—Que tampoco imiten a los esclavos, hombres o mujeres, en las acciones propias de su condición.

—Tampoco eso.

—Ni a los hombres malos y cobardes, o con cualidades opuestas a las que antes citábamos, que se querellan, se dirigen burlas u obscenidades unos a otros, ya cuando están embriagados, ya a sangre fría; ni las demás acciones o discursos en que tales gentes faltan a lo que se deben a sí mismos y a los demás. No creo tampoco que deban acostumbrarse a remedar lo que dicen o hacen los dementes. Debe conocerse a los dementes y a los malos hombres y mujeres, pero no se les debe imitar ni parecérseles.

—Es cierto —dijo.

—Pues ¿qué? —proseguí—. ¿Deben imitar a los herreros o a cualquier otro obrero, a los remeros de trirremes o a los que les marcan el ritmo, en fin, a personas semejantes?

—¿Cómo han de poder hacerlo —dijo—, cuando no les es permitido ni aun prestar atención a ninguna de estas profesiones?

—Y ¿qué hay del relincho de los caballos, el mugido de los toros, el murmullo de los ríos, del mar, del rayo y todo lo demás? ¿Les conviene imitar todo esto?

—¡Pero si se les ha vedado que sean locos y que imiten a los que lo son!

—Entonces —dije—, si comprendo bien tu pensamiento, hay un modo de hablar y de narrar de que se sirve el hombre de bien cuando tiene algo que decir; y hay otro modo muy diferente de éste, del cual se sirven los hombres cuyo natural o educación son opuestos a aquéllos.

—¿Cuáles son esos modos? —preguntó.

—En mi opinión —dije— el hombre cabal, cuando su discurso le lleva a referir lo que ha dicho o hecho un hombre semejante a él, se esforzará por representarle en su persona, y no se avergonzará de semejante imitación, sobre todo cuando tenga por objeto pintarle en una situación en que haya mostrado sabiduría y firmeza, y no lo hará con tanto gusto y asiduidad cuando se haya visto abatido por la enfermedad, vencido por el amor, embriagado o en cualquier otra situación análoga. Pero cuando se le presente un personaje que esté por bajo de él, nunca se rebajará hasta el punto de imitarlo seriamente, y lo hará sólo como de paso y cuando aquél haya de realizar una buena acción; y aun en este caso no dejará de ruborizarse, porque no está acostumbrado a imitar esta clase de personas, y se querría muy mal si se amoldase y formase según un modelo inferior a sí mismo; y sólo por ser cosa momentánea no rechazará esta imitación con desprecio.

—Es natural —dijo.

—Su narración será, pues, como la que referimos antes de Homero, en parte simple y en parte imitativa, si bien haciendo que aparezca pocas veces la imitación en todo el desarrollo del discurso; ¿tengo razón?

—Sí, así es como debe hablar un hombre de ese carácter —dijo.

—Con respecto al que tiene un carácter opuesto, en cambio —continué—, cuanto más malo sea, mayor será su tendencia a imitarlo todo; creerá que no hay nada que sea inferior a él, y así hará estudio en imitar en público a todas las cosas que antes enumeramos: el ruido del trueno, de los vientos, del granizo, de los ejes de los carros, de las ruedas; el sonido de las trompetas, de las flautas, siringes y toda suerte de instrumentos, incluso las voces de los perros, los corderos y las aves; todo su discurso se reducirá a imitar el tono y las expresiones de otro, sin que apenas entre en él la narración simple.

—No puede ser de otra manera —convino.

—Tales son las dos clases de narración de que quería hablarte.

—Así son, en efecto —dijo.

—La primera, como ves, admite pocos cambios y tan pronto como se ha encontrado la armonía y el ritmo que le convienen, al recitador le basta con ceñirse a la misma cadencia y armonía —pues son escasas las variaciones— y a un ritmo también muy uniforme.

—Así es —dijo.

—La segunda clase, por el contrario, ¿no te parece que necesita de todas las armonías y de todos los ritmos para expresar bien lo que quiere decir, puesto que abraza todos los cambios imaginables?

—Es cierto también, en efecto.

—Pero ¿acaso todos los poetas, y en general los que refieren alguna cosa, no emplean ya una, ya otra de estas narraciones, o las mezclan?

—Forzosamente —admitió.

—¿Qué haremos en este caso? —pregunté—. ¿Daremos cabida en nuestro Estado a estas tres clases de narraciones o sólo admitiremos una u otra de las simples o la mixta?

—Si ha de vencer mi opinión —dijo—, nos atendremos a la imitación simple, hecha para representar al hombre de bien.

—Sí; pero mi querido Adimanto, la narración mixta es también muy grata; pero la narración opuesta a la que tú escoges es la que agrada más a los niños, a los que gobiernan a la juventud y al pueblo en general.

—En efecto, es la que más agrada.

—Aunque quizá alegarás —dije— que no se conforma esto con nuestro plan de gobierno, porque entre nosotros no hay un hombre que reúna en sí los talentos de dos o más hombres, y cada uno sólo puede hacer una cosa.

—En efecto, no se ajusta.

—Por este mismo motivo, sólo en nuestro Estado el zapatero es simplemente zapatero y no piloto; el labrador, labrador y no juez; el guerrero, guerrero y no comerciante; y así de los demás.

—Es cierto —dijo.

—Luego, si uno de estos hombres, hábiles en el arte de imitarlo todo y de adoptar mil formas diferentes, viniese a nuestra ciudad para exhibir su arte y sus obras, nosotros le rendiríamos homenaje como a un hombre divino, maravilloso y arrebatador; pero le diríamos que nuestro Estado no puede poseer un hombre de su condición y que no nos era posible admitir personas semejantes. Le despediríamos después de haber derramado mirra sobre su cabeza y de haberla adornado con ínfulas de lana; y nos daríamos por contentos con tener un poeta y recitador más austero y menos agradable, si bien más útil, que imitara el tono del discurso que conviene al hombre de bien, y siguiera escrupulosamente las fórmulas que hemos prescrito al trazar el plan de la educación de nuestros guerreros.

—Si se nos dejara la elección, preferiríamos el último sin dudar —dijo.

— Il semble bien, dis-je, que je sois un maître ridicule, et qui manque de clarté. Alors, comme les gens qui ne savent pas bien parler, ce n’est pas de fagot globale e mais en détachant une partie du sujet que je vais essayer, sur elle, de te rendre visible ce que je veux dire. Alors dis-moi : tu connais le début de l’Iliade, où le poète déclare que Chrysès demanda à Agamemnon de relâcher sa fille, mais que l’autre s’irrita, et que le premier, puisqu’il n’obtenait rien, 393 s’adressa à son dieu pour qu’il maudisse les Achéens ?

— Oui, je le connais.

— Alors tu sais que jusqu’à ces vers : et il suppliait tous les Achéens mais surtout les deux fils dA’trée, bons rangeurs de guerriers, c’est le poète qui parle lui-même, sans essayer de nous détourner l’esprit dans une autre direction, pour nous faire croire que celui qui parle soit quelqu’un d’autre que lui-même. En revanche dans ce qui suit, b il parle comme s’il était lui-même Chrysès, en essayant le plus possible de nous faire croire que ce n’est pas Homère qui parle, mais le prêtre, c’est-à-dire un vieillard. Et de fait, c’est ainsi qu’il a composé presque tout le reste de la narration "concernant les événements d’Ilion, et ceux d’Ithaque et de toute l’Odyssée.

— Oui, certainement, dit-il.

— Il y a donc narration à la fois quand il énonce chacun des discours prononcés, et quand il énonce ce qui se trouve entre les discours ?

— Forcément.

— Mais dans le cas où il énonce quelque discours comme s’il c était quelqu’un d’autre, ne dirons-nous pas qu’alors il rend le plus possible sa propre façon de dire semblable à celle de chaque personnage dont il a annoncé qu’il va le laisser parler ?

— Si, nous le dirons. Que dire d’autre ?

— Or se rendre semblable à quelqu’un d’autre, soit par la voix, soit par l’allure, c’est imiter celui à qui on se rend semblable ?

— Sans doute.

— Donc dans un cas de ce genre, apparemment, lui et les autres poètes effectuent leur narration par l’imitation.

— Oui, exactement.

— Tandis que si le poète ne se dissimulait jamais, toute la composition poétique et toute la narration procéderaient chez lui sans recours à l’imitation. d Mais pour que tu n’ailles pas à nouveau dire que tu ne comprends pas, je vais formuler ce que cela pourrait donner. Si Homère, après avoir dit que Chrysès était venu apporter la rançon de sa fille, et supplier les Achéens, et surtout leurs rois, avait parlé ensuite, non pas comme s’il devenait Chrysès, mais toujours en restant Homère, ce n’aurait pas été une imitation, tu le sais, mais une narration simple. Cela aurait donné à peu près ceci (je vais le formuler sans recours au mètre ; car je ne suis pas doué pour la poésie) : " Le prêtre vint et leur adressa des prières ; e il demandait aux dieux de leur accorder de prendre Troie, en restant saufs eux-mêmes, et les priait, eux, de relâcher sa fille, en acceptant la rançon et en faisant preuve de respect envers "son dieu. Quand il eut dit cela, les Achéens éprouvèrent un sentiment religieux, et approuvèrent, mais Agamemnon, lui, s’irrita, enjoignant au prêtre de partir sur-le-champ, et de ne pas revenir, de peur que le sceptre et les bandelettes du dieu ne suffisent pas à le préserver. Et il lui dit qu’avant d’être relâchée, sa fille vieillirait à Argos avec lui. Et il lui enjoignit de partir et de ne pas l’irriter s’il voulait rentrer chez lui 394 sain et sauf. Alors le vieillard, l’ayant entendu, prit peur et partit en silence ; mais une fois sorti du camp il adressa de nombreuses prières à Apollon, invoquant le dieu par ses titres, lui remettant en mémoire, pour lui en demander la contrepartie, les offrandes qu’il avait pu lui faire, en lui édifiant des temples, ou en lui sacrifiant des victimes. En remerciement de quoi il le priait de faire payer aux Achéens, par ses flèches, les larmes qu’il versait . " C’est ainsi, dis-je, mon camarade, que procède, sans b imitation, une narration simple.

— Je comprends, dit-il.

— Comprends alors, dis-je, qu’elle procède à l’opposé de ce qu’on vient de voir lorsque, en supprimant les interventions du poète qui sont entre les discours, on ne laisse que les répliques alternées.

— Cela aussi, dit-il, je le comprends, c’est ce qu’on a dans les tragédies. Ta supposition est très exacte, dis-je, et je crois qu’à présent je vais pouvoir te montrer ce que je ne parvenais pas à te montrer auparavant ; à savoir que dans la composition poétique comme dans la composition d’histoires il est une manière de faire qui procède c entièrement par imitation ; c’est, comme tu le dis, le cas de la tragédie et de la coniédie ; une autre qui procède par la relation qu’en fait le poète lui-même — c’est ce qu’on trouverait surtout dans des dithyrambes ; une autre enfin qui procède par l’une "et par l’autre, dans la poésie épique et en bien d’autres endroits encore, si tu me suis.

— Mais oui, j’entends ce que tu voulais dire tout à l’heure.

— Alors souviens-toi aussi de ce qui précédait, quand nous déclarions que nous en avions terminé avec ce qu’il fallait dire, mais qu’il nous fallait encore examiner la façon dont il fallait le dire. Oui, je m’en souviens.

— Eh bien voilà justement ce que je voulais dire : d qu’il fallait nous mettre d’accord pour savoir si nous permettrions à nos poètes de faire des narrations en imitant, ou bien en imitant certaines choses et d’autres non, et lesquelles dans l’un et dans l’autre cas, ou si encore nous ne leur permettrions pas du tout de se livrer à l’imitation.

— Je devine, dit-il, que tu soumets à examen la question de savoir si nous accueillerons tragédie et comédie dans la cité, ou non.

— Peut-être, dis-je, et peut-être s’agit-il d’encore plus que de cela. Pour ma part, en effet, je ne le sais pas encore, mais là où le dialogue, comme un souffle, nous portera, c’est là qu’il faut aller.

— Mais oui, dit-il, tu parles comme il faut. e — Alors considère ce point, Adimante: s’il faut que nos gardiens soient hommes d’imitation, ou non. Ou bien est-ce qu’il s’ensuit également de ce qui précède, que chaque individu ne saurait s’appliquer comme il faut qu’à une seule tâche, et non à plusieurs ; et que s’il entreprenait de toucher à de nombreuses tâches, il échouerait à parvenir à la renommée en aucune ?

— Comment y parviendrait-il, en effet ?

— Au sujet de l’imitation aussi l’argument est le même, "à savoir que le même homme n’est pas capable d’imiter plusieurs choses aussi bien qu’une seule ?

— Non, en effet, il n’en est pas capable.

— Il paraît donc difficile 395 qu’il puisse à la fois s’appliquer à une des tâches qui méritent qu’on en parle, imiter plusieurs choses, et être homme d’imitation, puisque déjà les mêmes hommes, n’est-ce pas, ne peuvent bien réaliser à la fois ces deux imitations qui pourtant semblent proches l’une de l’autre, que sont la composition de comédies, et celle de tragédies. Ne les appelais-tu pas à l’instant toutes deux des imitations ?

— Si. Et tu dis vrai, que les mêmes hommes ne le peuvent pas.

— Et que l’on n’est pas à la fois rhapsode, et acteur.

— C’est vrai.

— Et que ce ne sont pas non plus b les mêmes acteurs qui servent les auteurs de comédies, et les auteurs de tragédies. Or tout cela, ce sont des imitations. N’est-ce pas ?

— Ce sont des imitations.

— Et c’est en plus petits fragments encore, Adimante, que la nature de l’homme me semble être morcelée, ce qui le rend incapable de bien imiter plusieurs objets, comme de faire les choses mêmes dont les imitations essaient justement de donner des équivalents.

— Tout à fait vrai, dit-il.

— Donc, si nous devons préserver l’argument premier, à savoir que nos gardiens, renonçant à tous les autres artisanats, doivent être de façon très précise c les artisans de la liberté de la cité, et ne s’appliquer qu’à ce qui y contribue, alors il faudrait qu’ils ne fassent ni n’imitent rien d’autre que cela. Et si jamais ils imitent, que dès l’enfance ils imitent ce qui leur convient : des hommes virils, maîtres d’eux-mêmes, pieux, libres, et tout ce qui s’y apparente ; que ce qui manque de liberté ils ne le pratiquent pas, ni ne se montrent capables de l’imiter, ni non "plus rien d’autre de ce qui est déshonorant, de façon à éviter que la pratique de l’imitation ne leur donne du goût pour la chose réeIle. Ne te rends-tu pas compte d que les imitations, si on les accomplit continûment dès sa jeunesse, se transforment en façons d’être et en une seconde nature, à la fois dans le corps, dans les intonations de la voix, et dans la disposition d’esprit ?

— Si, certainement, dit-il.

— Alors nous ne permettrons pas, dis-je, à ceux dont nous affirmons nous soucier, et dont nous disons qu’ils doivent devenir des hommes de bien, d’imiter — eux qui sont des hommes — une femme, jeune ou moins jeune, qui injurie un homme ou qui, face aux dieux, les querelle et se compare à eux, parce qu’elle se croit heureuse, ou qui au contraire est plongée dans le malheur, e la souffrance, et les lamentations. Et de même nous serons loin de permettre qu’on imite une femme malade, amoureuse, ou en mal d’enfant.

— Oui, certainement, dit-il.

— Ni non plus qu’on imite les esclaves, femmes et hommes, faisant ce qui est le propre des esclaves.

— Non plus.

— Mais comment serait-ce permis, dit-il, à des hommes qui n’auront pas la permission de prêter seulement attention à aucune de ces choses ?

— Voyons alors : le hennissement des chevaux, le mugissement des taureaux, le bruissement des fleuves, le ressac de la mer, les coups de tonnerre, et tous les bruits de ce genre, les imiteront-ils ?

— Mais, dit-iI, il leur a été interdit aussi bien de délirer que de se rendre semblables à ceux qui délirent.

— Alors, dis-je, si je comprends ce que tu dis, il existe une espèce de diction et de narration, qu’adopterait, dans ses récits, celui qui est réellement un homme c de bien, chaque fois qu’il devrait parler ; et une autre espèce, en revanche, dissemblable de la première, à laquelle s’attacherait constamment, en s’y conformant dans ses récits, celui qui, par sa nature et par son éducation, serait le contraire du précédent. — Oui, dit-il, il en sera nécessairement ainsi.

— Voilà alors, dis-je, les deux espèces de diction dont je voulais parler.

— Oui, les voilà, dit-il.

— Eh bien de ces deux-là, la première ne comporte que des petites variations, et si l’on imprime à la diction l’harmonie et le rythme adaptés, il en résulte que celui qui "parle correctement, parle à peu près en conservant la même harmonie, selon une harmonie unique — puisque les variations sont faibles — et même sur un rythme c également à peu près constant.

— C’est exactement cela, dit-il.

— C’est donc pour cela que dans une telle cité, et en elle seulement, nous trouverons que le cordonnier est cordonnier et non pas pilote, en plus de son travail de cordonnier, et le cultivateur cultivateur, et non pas juge en plus de son métier de cultivateur, et l’homme de "guerre homme de guerre, et non pas voué à l’argent en plus de son métier de guerrier, et ainsi de suite pour tous ?

Enough of the subjects of poetry : let us now speak of the style ; and when this has been considered, both matter and manner will have been completely treated.

I do not understand what you mean, said Adeimantus.

Then I must make you understand ; and perhaps I may be more intelligible if I put the matter in this way. You are aware, I suppose, that all mythology and poetry are a narration of events, either past, present, or to come ?

Certainly, he replied.

And narration may be either simple narration or imitation, or a union of the two ? That, again, he said, I do not quite understand.

I fear that I must be a ridiculous teacher when I have so much difficulty in making myself apprehended. Like a bad speaker, therefore, I will not take the whole of the subject, but will break a piece off in illustration of my meaning. You know the first lines of the “Iliad,” in which the poet says that Chryses prayed Agamemnon to release his daughter, and that Agamemnon flew into a passion with him ; whereupon Chryses, failing of his object, invoked the anger of the god against the Achaeans. Now as far as these lines,

“And he prayed all the Greeks, but especially the two sons of Atreus, the chiefs of the people,”

the poet is speaking in his own person ; he never leads us to suppose that he is anyone else. But in what follows he takes the person of Chryses, and then he does all that he can to make us believe that the speaker is not Homer, but the aged priest himself. And in this double form he has cast the entire narrative of the events which occurred at Troy and in Ithaca and throughout the “Odyssey.”

Yes.

And a narrative it remains both in the speeches which the poet recites from time to time and in the intermediate passages ?

Quite true.

But when the poet speaks in the person of another, may we not say that he assimilates his style to that of the person who, as he informs you, is going to speak ?

Certainly.

And this assimilation of himself to another, either by the use of voice or gesture, is the imitation of the person whose character he assumes ?

Of course.

Then in this case the narrative of the poet may be said to proceed by way of imitation ?

Very true.

Or, if the poet everywhere appears and never conceals himself, then again the imitation is dropped, and his poetry becomes simple narration. However, in order that I may make my meaning quite clear, and that you may no more say, “I don’t understand,” I will show how the change might be effected. If Homer had said, “The priest came, having his daughter’s ransom in his hands, supplicating the Achaeans, and above all the kings ;” and then if, instead of speaking in the person of Chryses, he had continued in his own person, the words would have been, not imitation, but simple narration. The passage would have run as follows (I am no poet, and therefore I drop the metre) : “The priest came and prayed the gods on behalf of the Greeks that they might capture Troy and return safely home, but begged that they would give him back his daughter, and take the ransom which he brought, and respect the god. Thus he spoke, and the other Greeks revered the priest and assented. But Agamemnon was wroth, and bade him depart and not come again, lest the staff and chaplets of the god should be of no avail to him — the daughter of Chryses should not be released, he said — she should grow old with him in Argos. And then he told him to go away and not to provoke him, if he intended to get home unscathed. And the old man went away in fear and silence, and, when he had left the camp, he called upon Apollo by his many names, reminding him of everything which he had done pleasing to him, whether in building his temples, or in offering sacrifice, and praying that his good deeds might be returned to him, and that the Achaeans might expiate his tears by the arrows of the god” — and so on. In this way the whole becomes simple narrative.

I understand, he said.

Or you may suppose the opposite case — that the intermediate passages are omitted, and the dialogue only left.

That also, he said, I understand ; you mean, for example, as in tragedy.

You have conceived my meaning perfectly ; and if I mistake not, what you failed to apprehend before is now made clear to you, that poetry and mythology are, in some cases, wholly imitative — instances of this are supplied by tragedy and comedy ; there is likewise the opposite style, in which the poet is the only speaker — of this the dithyramb affords the best example ; and the combination of both is found in epic and in several other styles of poetry. Do I take you with me ?

Yes, he said ; I see now what you meant.

I will ask you to remember also what I began by saying, that we had done with the subject and might proceed to the style.

Yes, I remember.

In saying this, I intended to imply that we must come to an understanding about the mimetic art — whether the poets, in narrating their stories, are to be allowed by us to imitate, and if so, whether in whole or in part, and if the latter, in what parts ; or should all imitation be prohibited ?

You mean, I suspect, to ask whether tragedy and comedy shall be admitted into our State ?

Yes, I said ; but there may be more than this in question : I really do not know as yet, but whither the argument may blow, thither we go.

And go we will, he said.

Then, Adeimantus, let me ask you whether our guardians ought to be imitators ; or rather, has not this question been decided by the rule already laid down that one man can only do one thing well, and not many ; and that if he attempt many, he will altogether fail of gaining much reputation in any ?

Certainly.

And this is equally true of imitation ; no one man can imitate many things as well as he would imitate a single one ?

He cannot.

Then the same person will hardly be able to play a serious part in life, and at the same time to be an imitator and imitate many other parts as well ; for even when two species of imitation are nearly allied, the same persons cannot succeed in both, as, for example, the writers of tragedy and comedy — did you not just now call them imitations ?

Yes, I did ; and you are right in thinking that the same persons cannot succeed in both.

Any more than they can be rhapsodists and actors at once ?

True.

Neither are comic and tragic actors the same ; yet all these things are but imitations.

They are so.

And human nature, Adeimantus, appears to have been coined into yet smaller pieces, and to be as incapable of imitating many things well, as of performing well the actions of which the imitations are copies. Quite true, he replied.

If then we adhere to our original notion and bear in mind that our guardians, setting aside every other business, are to dedicate themselves wholly to the maintenance of freedom in the State, making this their craft, and engaging in no work which does not bear on this end, they ought not to practise or imitate anything else ; if they imitate at all, they should imitate from youth upward only those characters which are suitable to their profession — the courageous, temperate, holy, free, and the like ; but they should not depict or be skilful at imitating any kind of illiberality or baseness, lest from imitation they should come to be what they imitate. Did you never observe how imitations, beginning in early youth and continuing far into life, at length grow into habits and become a second nature, affecting body, voice, and mind ?

Yes, certainly, he said.

Then, I said, we will not allow those for whom we profess a care and of whom we say that they ought to be good men, to imitate a woman, whether young or old, quarrelling with her husband, or striving and vaunting against the gods in conceit of her happiness, or when she is in affliction, or sorrow, or weeping ; and certainly not one who is in sickness, love, or labor.

Very right, he said.

Neither must they represent slaves, male or female, performing the offices of slaves ?

They must not.

And surely not bad men, whether cowards or any others, who do the reverse of what we have just been prescribing, who scold or mock or revile one another in drink or out of drink, or who in any other manner sin against themselves and their neighbors in word or deed, as the manner of such is. Neither should they be trained to imitate the action or speech of men or women who are mad or bad ; for madness, like vice, is to be known but not to be practised or imitated.

Very true, he replied.

Neither may they imitate smiths or other artificers, or oarsmen, or boatswains, or the like ?

How can they, he said, when they are not allowed to apply their minds to the callings of any of these ?

Nor may they imitate the neighing of horses, the bellowing of bulls, the murmur of rivers and roll of the ocean, thunder, and all that sort of thing ?

Nay, he said, if madness be forbidden, neither may they copy the behavior of madmen.

You mean, I said, if I understand you aright, that there is one sort of narrative style which may be employed by a truly good man when he has anything to say, and that another sort will be used by a man of an opposite character and education.

And which are these two sorts ? he asked.

Suppose, I answered, that a just and good man in the course of a narration comes on some saying or action of another good man — I should imagine that he will like to personate him, and will not be ashamed of this sort of imitation : he will be most ready to play the part of the good man when he is acting firmly and wisely ; in a less degree when he is overtaken by illness or love or drink, or has met with any other disaster. But when he comes to a character which is unworthy of him, he will not make a study of that ; he will disdain such a person, and will assume his likeness, if at all, for a moment only when he is performing some good action ; at other times he will be ashamed to play a part which he has never practised, nor will he like to fashion and frame himself after the baser models ; he feels the employment of such an art, unless in jest, to be beneath him, and his mind revolts at it.

So I should expect, he replied.

Then he will adopt a mode of narration such as we have illustrated out of Homer, that is to say, his style will be both imitative and narrative ; but there will be very little of the former, and a great deal of the latter. Do you agree ?

Certainly, he said ; that is the model which such a speaker must necessarily take.

But there is another sort of character who will narrate anything, and, the worse he is, the more unscrupulous he will be ; nothing will be too bad for him : and he will be ready to imitate anything, not as a joke, but in right good earnest, and before a large company. As I was just now saying, he will attempt to represent the roll of thunder, the noise of wind and hail, or the creaking of wheels, and pulleys, and the various sounds of flutes, pipes, trumpets, and all sorts of instruments : he will bark like a dog, bleat like a sheep, or crow like a cock ; his entire art will consist in imitation of voice and gesture, and there will be very little narration.

That, he said, will be his mode of speaking.

These, then, are the two kinds of style ?

Yes.

And you would agree with me in saying that one of them is simple and has but slight changes ; and if the harmony and rhythm are also chosen for their simplicity, the result is that the speaker, if he speaks correctly, is always pretty much the same in style, and he will keep within the limits of a single harmony (for the changes are not great), and in like manner he will make use of nearly the same rhythm ?

That is quite true, he said.

Whereas the other requires all sorts of harmonies and all sorts of rhythms, if the music and the style are to correspond, because the style has all sorts of changes.

That is also perfectly true, he replied.

And do not the two styles, or the mixture of the two, comprehend all poetry, and every form of expression in words ? No one can say anything except in one or other of them or in both together.

They include all, he said.

And shall we receive into our State all the three styles, or one only of the two unmixed styles ? or would you include the mixed ?

I should prefer only to admit the pure imitator of virtue. Yes, I said, Adeimantus ; but the mixed style is also very charming : and indeed the pantomimic, which is the opposite of the one chosen by you, is the most popular style with children and their attendants, and with the world in general.

I do not deny it.

But I suppose you would argue that such a style is unsuitable to our State, in which human nature is not twofold or manifold, for one man plays one part only ?

Yes ; quite unsuitable.

And this is the reason why in our State, and in our State only, we shall find a shoemaker to be a shoemaker and not a pilot also, and a husbandman to be a husbandman and not a dicast also, and a soldier a soldier and not a trader also, and the same throughout ?

True, he said.

And therefore when any one of these pantomimic gentlemen, who are so clever that they can imitate anything, comes to us, and makes a proposal to exhibit himself and his poetry, we will fall down and worship him as a sweet and holy and wonderful being ; but we must also inform him that in our State such as he are not permitted to exist ; the law will not allow them. And so when we have anointed him with myrrh, and set a garland of wool upon his head, we shall send him away to another city. For we mean to employ for our souls’ health the rougher and severer poet or story-teller, who will imitate the style of the virtuous only, and will follow those models which we prescribed at first when we began the education of our soldiers.

We certainly will, he said, if we have the power.

Or have you not observed, that imitations, if from earliest youth they be continued onwards for a long time, are established into the manners and natural temper, both with reference to the body and voice, and likewise the dianoëtic power?” “Very much so,” replied he. “We will not surely allow,” said I, “those we profess to take care of, and who ought to be good men, to imitate a woman, either young or old, either reviling her husband, or quarrelling with the Gods, or speaking boastingly when she imagines herself happy; nor yet to imitate her in her misfortunes, (395e) sorrows, and lamentations, when sick, or in love, or in child-bed labour.
