3. Podría argüirse que nada impide que una sola y misma cosa tenga múltiples atributos. Pero, con todo, el sujeto de todos ellos habría de ser uno, porque no puede existir multiplicidad sin unidad de la que derive y en la que se dé, al menos, una de las cosas múltiples con las que contamos habrá de ser la primera de todas, pudiendo, entonces, tomarse en sí misma y aisladamente. Si se dijese que se da a la vez que las demás, convendría reunirla con ellas, y, aun considerándola diferente, permitir que vaya con esas cosas. Sería preciso, pues, buscar un sujeto que no estuviese en las otras cosas, sino tan sólo en sí mismo. Porque, aunque pudiese hablarse de un sujeto que se da en las otras cosas, sería un sujeto que se le pareciese, pero no este sujeto mismo, puesto que, si tal sujeto ha de poder verse en las otras cosas, él mismo tiene que estar aislado. Y, si se afirmase que sólo tiene existencia en las otras cosas, entonces, ese sujeto no existiría en estado simple, pero ello supondría que tampoco puede existir el compuesto. Porque, si no puede existir un ser en estado simple, la sustancia no tiene fundamento. Y, si lo simple no existe, menos podrá existir lo compuesto de lo simple. Porque no podría existir por separado cada uno de los términos simples, si no tiene realidad sustancial por sí mismo; y, supuesto esto último, no podría de ningún modo unirse a otro ser, puesto que no existe en absoluto ninguno de tales seres. ¿Cómo, por ejemplo, podría existir un ser compuesto y provenir de cosas que no poseen el ser? ¿Cómo podría provenir, no de cosas que no poseen el ser, sino de cosas que no lo poseen en absoluto? Si, pues, el ser pensante es algo múltiple, conviene que el pensamiento no se de en algo que no es múltiple. Esto es lo que ocurre con el Primero; por lo cual el pensamiento y la inteligencia se darán en los seres que vienen después de El.

III. Rien, dira-t-on, n'empêche que le premier principe ne soit à la fois identique et multiple. — Nous répondrons qu'au multiple il faut un sujet un. Le multiple ne peut exister sans l'Un de qui il provient et en qui il est, sans l'Un qui est compté le Premier en dehors des autres choses et qu'il ne faut considérer qu'en lui-même. Si l'on prétend qu'il coexiste avec les autres choses, il n'en faut pas moins, tout en le prenant avec les autres choses avec lesquelles on suppose qu'il coexiste, le regarder comme différent d'elles, par conséquent, ne pas le considérer comme coexistant avec les autres choses, mais admettre qu'il en est le sujet (τὸ ὑποκείμενον) et qu'il existe en lui-même au lieu de coexister avec les autres choses dont il est le sujet.

En effet, ce qui est identique dans les choses autres que l'Un est sans doute semblable à l'Un, mais n'est pas l'Un. L'Un doit exister seul en lui-même pour être saisi dans les autres choses, à moins qu'on ne prétende que son essence consiste à subsister avec les autres choses. Dans cette hypothèse, il n'existera ni aucune chose absolument simple, ni aucune chose composée : il n'existera aucune chose absolument simple, puisque ce qui est simple ne saurait subsister par lui-même; il n'existera non plus aucune chose composée, puisqu'il n'existera rien de simple. Car, si nulle chose simple ne possède l'existence, s'il n'y a pas une unité simple, subsistant par elle-même, qui puisse servir de soutien au composé, si nulle de ces choses n'est capable d'exister par elle-même, ni, à plus forte raison, de se communiquer à d'autres, puisqu'elle n'existe pas, il en résulte que ce qui est composé de toutes ces choses ne saurait non plus exister, puisqu'il aurait pour éléments des choses qui ne sont pas, qui ne sont absolument rien. Donc, si l'on admet que le multiple existe, il faut admettre aussi que l'Un existe antérieurement au multiple. Or, puisque ce qui pense est multiple, le principe qui n'est pas multiple doit ne pas penser; mais ce principe, c'est le Premier; par conséquent, l'Intelligence et la pensée sont des choses postérieures au Premier.

3. - Dira-t-on que rien n'empêche qu'une seule et même chose ait des attributs multiples ? - Le sujet de ces attributs, à tout le moins, est un ; pas de multiplicité, s'il n'y a une unité dont elle dérive et en laquelle elle est, s'il n'y a au moins une de ces choses multiples qui est comptée la première, et que l'on peut isoler et saisir en elle-même. - Dira-t-on que ce premier terme est simultané aux autres ? - Alors il faut le réunir avec les autres, et bien qu'il soit différent d'eux tous, l'abandonner puisqu'il ne se sépare pas des autres. Il faut, en revanche, postuler un sujet, sujet qui n'est plus un terme parmi les autres, mais qui existe en lui-même. - Ce sujet, dira-t-on, est au sein même des autres termes. - Oui, un sujet qui lui ressemble, mais non ce sujet lui-même ; car, pour qu'il apparaisse dans le multiple, il faut que, en lui-même, il soit isolé. - Dira-t-on qu'il n'a d'existence que dans son union aux autres termes ? - Donc il n'existera pas à l'état simple. Mais alors il n'y aura pas non plus de composé ; car s'il ne peut être à l'état simple, il n'aura aucune existence substantielle ; et si le simple n'existe pas, le composé n'existera pas non plus. Car chacun de ces termes ne peut être un terme simple, puisqu'il n'y a pas de terme simple doué d'une existence substantielle ; et aucun d'eux ne pouvant avoir en lui-même d'existence substantielle ne peut se lier à un autre, puisqu'aucun d'eux absolument n'existe. Comment alors un composé pourrait-il exister ? Comment naîtrait-il de choses qui n'ont pas l'être, je ne dis pas de choses qui n'ont pas tout l'être, mais de choses qui n'ont pas d'être du tout ? S'il y a une multiplicité, il faut, avant cette multiplicité, une unité. Si donc l'être pensant est une multiplicité, il ne faut pas que la pensée soit en ce qui n'est pas une multiplicité. Or tel est le Premier. La pensée et l'intelligence sont donc en des êtres postérieurs à lui.

3. It might be objected that nothing (in all this) would hinder the first Principle from being both single and manifold. We will answer that the manifold needs a single subject. The manifold cannot exist without the One from which it comes, and in which it is; without the One which is counted the first outside of other things, and which must be considered only in itself. Even on the supposition that it co-exists with other things, it must, none the less, while being taken with the other things with which it is supposed to co-exist, be considered as different from them. Consequently, it must not be considered as co-existing with other things, but be considered as their subject (or, substrate), and as existing in itself, instead of co-existing with the other things of which it is the subject.

WITHOUT SOMETHING SIMPLE, NOTHING MANIFOLD COULD EXIST.

Indeed, that which is identical in things other than the One, may no doubt be similar to the One, but cannot be the One. The One must exist alone in itself, thus to be grasped in other things, unless we should claim that its (nature) consists in subsisting with other things. Under this hypothesis, there will not exist either anything absolutely simple, nor any: thing composite. Nothing absolutely simple will exist, since that which is simple could not subsist by itself; neither could anything composite exist, since nothing simple will exist. For if no simple thing possess existence, if there be no simple unity, subsisting by itself, which could serve as support to the composite, none of these things be capable of existing by itself, let alone communcating to others, since it does not exist; we must conclude that that which, of all these things, is composite, could not exist, since it would be made up out of elements that do not exist, and which are absolutely nothing. Therefore, if we insist on the existence of the manifold, we are implying the exist-ent5etÂ°Lthe Â°ne before the manifold. Now since that which thinks is multiple, the principle that is not manifold will not think. But as this Principle is the first, then Intelligence and thought are entities later than the first.

III. If, however, it should be said, that nothing hinders this same thing which is the first from being many, we reply that in these many there will be a subject. For it is not possible for the many to subsist, unless the one exists, from which, or in which they subsist; or in short, unless there is a one which is prior to other things that are numbered among themselves, and which it is necessary to receive itself in itself alone. But if it subsists in conjunction with other things, it is necessary having received this with other things, but which at the same time is different from them, that we should suffer it to be with other things, but that we should also investigate this subject, no longer in conjunction with other things of which it is the subject, but itself by itself. For that which is the same in other things, will indeed be similar to this, but will not be this. It is necessary, however, that it should be alone, if it is to be seen in other things, unless it should be said that the being of it has its hypostasis in conjunction with other things. Hence, there will not be that which is itself simple; nor will there be that which is composed of many things. For since that which is simple has no subsistence, neither will that which is a composite of many things subsist. For because each simple thing is unable to exist, no one certain simple thing subsisting from itself, hence since that which is multitudinous is not able to have an hypostasis by itself, nor to impart itself to another thing, because it has no existence, how can there be that which is composed of all things, when it must consist of nonentities, which are not merely negations of a certain thing, but have no subsistence whatever ? If, therefore, a certain thing is multitude, it is necessary there should be one prior to the many. Hence, if that which is intellective is a certain multitude, it is necessary that there should not be intellectual perception in that which is not1 multitude. This, however, is the first . In the natures, therefore, posterior to it, there will be intellectual perception and intellect.

3. We may be told that nothing prevents an identity being thus multiple. But there must be a unity underlying the aggregate: a manifold is impossible without a unity for its source or ground, or at least, failing some unity, related or unrelated. This unity must be numbered as first before all and can be apprehended only as solitary and self-existent.

When we recognize it, resident among the mass of things, our business is to see it for what it is - present to the items but essentially distinguished from them - and, while not denying it there, to seek this underly of all no longer as it appears in those other things but as it stands in its pure identity by itself. The identity resident in the rest of things is no doubt close to authentic identity but cannot be it; and, if the identity of unity is to be displayed beyond itself, it must also exist within itself alone.

It may be suggested that its existence takes substantial form only by its being resident among outside things: but, at this, it is itself no longer simplex nor could any coherence of manifolds occur. On the one hand things could take substantial existence only if they were in their own virtue simplex. On the other hand, failing a simplex, the aggregate of multiples is itself impossible: for the simplex individual thing could not exist if there were no simplex unity independent of the individual,  and, not existing, much less could it enter into composition with any other such: it becomes impossible then for the compound universe, the aggregate of all, to exist; it would be the coming together of things that are not, things not merely lacking an identity of their own but utterly non-existent.

Once there is any manifold, there must be a precedent unity: since any intellection implies multiplicity in the intellective subject, the non-multiple must be without intellection; that non-multiple will be the First: intellection and the Intellectual-Principle must be characteristic of beings coming later.
