11 Pero hay que examinar cómo está el uno en el Ser, cómo es la supuesta división y cómo es, en general, la de los géneros y si es la misma en uno y otro caso. Pues bien, en primer lugar, ¿en qué sentido se dice que es una y en qué sentido es una cada cosa, cualquiera que sea? En segundo lugar, ¿decimos que la unidad se da en el Uno-Ser del mismo modo que en el Uno en sí?

Pues bien, la unidad que hay en todas las cosas no es la misma. Porque ni se da del mismo modo en los sensibles que en los inteligibles —pero tampoco el ser— ni se da del mismo modo en los sensibles comparados entre sí. Porque no es la misma en un coro y en un ejército que en una nave y en una casa, ni en éstas que en una cosa continua. Sin embargo, todas las cosas imitan al mismo Uno, pero sucede que unas lo imitan de lejos y otras en mayor grado, y donde la unidad es ya más verdadera es en la Inteligencia; porque el alma es una, mas la Inteligencia es más una todavía, como lo es también el Ser.

—Según eso, en cada cosa, al enunciar su ser, ¿enunciamos su unidad, y según sea su ser así será su unidad?

—Esto sucede accidentalmente. No es verdad, sin embargo, que cada cosa sea una en la medida en que es ser, sino que es posible que, no siendo menos ser, sea menos una. Un ejército o un coro no es menos ser que una casa, y sin embargo, es menos uno. Parece, pues, que la unidad que hay en cada cosa mira más al bien y que, en la medida en que tiene parte en el bien, en esa misma medida tiene parte en la unidad. Y en esto estriba el mayor o menor grado de unidad. Porque cada cosa aspira no a ser simplemente, sino a ser poseyendo el bien. Y por eso aun las cosas que no son unas se afanan, como pueden, por hacerse unas: las cosas naturales, juntándose en un mismo ser en virtud de su misma naturaleza, deseando aunarse. No se afanan cada una por separarse unas de otras, sino por unirse unas con otras y consigo mismas. Y todas las almas aspiran también a aunarse siguiendo su propia esencia. Y así, tienen al Uno a ambos lados: es su principio y su fin, puesto que el alma parte del Uno y aspira al Uno. Lo mismo pasa con el Bien, porque ninguna cosa vino a existir entre los seres ni, venida a la existencia, se daría por satisfecha sin aspirar al Bien. Esto por lo que toca a los seres naturales. Por lo que toca a los artificiales, cada arte dirige ella misma sus productos respectivos al Bien en cuanto puede y como aquéllos pueden.

Pero es el Ser el que mejor de todos consigue el Bien. Ya que está más cerca de él. De ahí que a las demás cosas nos contentemos con darles el nombre que les damos, por ejemplo «hombre». Porque aunque a veces digamos «un hombre», es por oposición a dos. Y si le damos el nombre de «uno» en algún otro sentido, se lo damos por añadidura, comenzando por el hombre mismo. Pero si se trata del Ser, le damos el nombre compuesto de «Uno-Ser» y lo honramos como «uno», tratando de indicar su íntimo consorcio con el Bien. Así, pues, aun en el Ser, el Uno es principio y fin, pero no como en las demás cosas, sino de otro modo, de suerte que la anterioridad y la posteridad se da aun en la unidad.

—¿En qué consiste, pues, el uno inherente al Ser? ¿No está del mismo modo en todas sus partes? ¿No es discernido como una nota común?

—En primer lugar, también en las líneas el punto es común a todas, y sin embargo no es género; asimismo, en los números, el uno es tal vez común a todos, y sin embargo no es género. Porque tampoco es el mismo el Uno en sí que el uno inherente al número uno, al dos y a los demás números. En segundo lugar, nada obsta para que, también en el Ser, unos Seres sean primarios y otros posteriores, unos simples y otros compuestos. Y aun cuando el uno fuera el mismo en todas las partes del Ser, la falta de diferencias haría que no generara especies. Pero si no genera especies, tampoco puede ser género.

Y basta sobre este punto.

XI. Il nous faut rechercher comment l'un subsiste dans l'être, comment ils se divisent tous deux, et en général comment se divisent les genres, et si ces deux divisions sont identiques ou différentes.

Pour résoudre ces questions, demandons-nous d'abord comment en général une chose quelconque est dite une et est une, ensuite si l'on dit dans le même sens que l'être est un et dans quel sens on le dit alors. Évidemment, un n'est pas le même pour tout : car on ne peut l'entendre de la même manière quand il s'agit des choses sensibles et quand il s'agit des choses intelligibles, pas plus que l'être n'est identique pour ces deux ordres de choses ou même pour les choses sensibles comparées entre elles. L'idée d'un n'est pas la même quand il s'agit d'un chœur, d'une armée, d'un vaisseau ou d'une maison ; elle l'est encore moins quand il s'agit d'une de ces choses et quand il s'agit d'objets continus. Et cependant, toutes choses imitent par leur unité le même archétype, les unes de plus loin, les autres de plus près ; l'Intelligence est assurément ce qui se rapproche le plus de l'Un absolu: car bien que déjà l'Ame soit une, l'Intelligence l'est beaucoup plus: elle est l'Être un.

Est-ce donc qu'en exprimant l'être de chaque chose nous exprimons en même temps l'unité qu'elle possède, de telle sorte qu'autant elle peut avoir d'être, autant elle a d'unité? Ou bien cela a-t-il lieu sans qu'une chose ait toujours l'unité en proportion de l'être? Oui : car il est possible qu'une chose ait moins d'unité sans avoir pour cela moins d'être: une armée, un chœur n'ont pas moins d'être qu'une maison et cependant on y trouve moins d'unité. L'un qui est dans chaque chose paraît donc aspirer au Bien, qui a plus d'unité (27) ; plus une chose se rapproche du Bien, plus en même temps elle est une; c'est de là que dépend en elle le plus ou le moins d'unité. En effet, chaque être désire, non pas simplement exister, mais aussi jouir du bien. C'est pourquoi ce qui n'est pas un s'efforce autant qu'il se peut de le devenir, et les êtres qui par essence possèdent l'unité y tendent également par leur nature en voulant s'unir à eux-mêmes: car les êtres ne cherchent pas à s'écarter les uns des autres, mais ils tendent au contraire les uns vers les autres et vers eux-mêmes. C'est ainsi que toutes les âmes voudraient ne former qu'une seule âme, tout en conservant leur propre nature (28). Partout, dans le monde sensible comme dans le monde intelligible, règne l'Un: c'est de lui que tout part, c'est vers lui que tout tend ; tous les êtres ont en lui leur principe et leur fin : car ce n'est qu'en lui qu'ils trouvent le bien ; ce n'est que par là que chaque être subsiste et occupe sa place dans l'univers; une fois existant, chaque être ne saurait s'empêcher de tendre vers l'Un. Et cela n'a pas lieu seulement dans les êtres; il en est de même dans les œuvres de Fart: chaque art cherche à conformer ses œuvres à l'unité autant qu'il se peut et autant que ses œuvres elles-mêmes le comportent. Mais ce qui y réussit le mieux, c'est l'Être même: car il est tout près de l'Un.

II en résulte qu'en parlant des êtres autres que l'Être même, de l'homme, par exemple, nous disons simplement homme  (29); si nous disons quelquefois un homme, c'est pour le distinguer de deux; si nous employons encore dans un autre sens le mot «n, c'est en y ajoutant quelque [quelqu'un] (30). Il n'en est pas de même pour l'Être : nous disons l'Être un en concevant l'Être et un comme formant un seul tout, et en posant l'Être comme un, nous faisons ressortir son étroite affinité avec le Bien. L'Être ainsi conçu devient un; il a dans l'Un son principe et sa fin (31); cependant il n'est pas un comme l'Un même, mais plutôt d'une manière différente, en ce sens que l'unité de l'Être admet l'antériorité et la postériorité. Qu'est donc l'unité de l'Être ? Ne doit-elle pas être envisagée comme semblable dans toutes les parties de l'Être, comme quelque chose de commun à toutes? ? — Mais d'abord, le point est aussi quelque chose de commun à toutes les lignes, et cependant il n'est pas un genre ; dans les nombres, l'un est également quelque chose de commun à tous, et il n'est pas plus un genre. En effet, l'un qui se retrouve dans la monade, dans la dyade et dans les autres nombres, ne peut être confondu avec l'Un en soi. Ensuite, rien n'empêche qu'il n'y ait dans l'Être des parties antérieures et d'autres postérieures, de simples et de composées . Et lors même que l'unité que l'on retrouve dans tontes les parties de l'Être serait partout identique , par cela même qu'elle n'offrirait aucune différence, elle ne pourrait engendrer des espèces, par conséquent elle ne saurait être un genre.

GENUINE RELATIONS BETWEEN UNITY AND ESSENCE.

11. The questions here to be solved are, how unity subsists within essence, how they both divide, and in general how any genera divide; and whether their two divisions be identical, or different. To solve these questions, we shall first have to ask how in general any thing whatever is said to be one, and is one; then, if it can be said in the same sense that essence is one, in what sense this is said. Evidently, unity is not the same for everything. It cannot even be understood in the same sense in respect to sense-things, and intelligible things; not any more than essence is identical for these two order of (beings), or even for sense-things compared to each other. The idea of unity is not the same in reference to a choric ballet, an army, a vessel or a house; it is even less so in respect of one of these things, and when it deals with continuous objects. And nevertheless, by their unity all theses things imitate the same archetype, some from far, some from near. Intelligence, surely, is assuredly that which most approaches absolute Unity; for although the soul already possess unity, Intelligence possesses it far more intensely; for it is the one essence.

UNITY REIGNS STILL MORE IN THE GOOD.

Is the expression of the essence of something simultaneously the expression of its unity, so that it possesses as much unity as it possesses essence? Or does this simultaneousness exist without any direct proportion between the amount of unity and essence? Yes; for it is possible that something have less unity without, on that account, having any the less essence; an army, a choric ballet have not less essence than a house, though far less unity. The unity present in each thing seems therefore to aspire to the Good, which has the most unity; for the closer something approaches the Good, the greater unity does it achieve; that is the criterion of greater or less unity. Indeed, every (being) desires not only merely to be (alive), but to enjoy the Good. That is why everything, so far as it can, hastens to become one, and those (benngs) which by nature possess unity naturally trend towards Him by desiring to unite with themselves. For every (being) hastens not to separate from others, but on the contrary their tendency is to tend towards each other and themselves. That is why all souls, while preserving their individual nature, would like to fuse into a single soul. The One reigns everywhere in the sense-world, as well as in the Intelligible. It is from Him that everything originates, it is towards Him that everything trends. In Him do all (beings) seek their principle and their goal; for only therein do they find their good; only by that does each (being) subsist, and occupies its place in the universe; once that it exists, no (being) could help trending towards the One. This occurs not only in nature, but even in the arts; where each art seeks, to the extent of its ability, to conform its works to unity, to the extent of its ability, and to the possibilities of its works. But that which succeeds best, is Essence itself, which is quite close to unity.

FURTHER REASONS WHY UNITY IS NOT A CATEGORY.

Consequently, in speaking of (beings) other than (essence itself), as, for instance, of man, we say simply "man" (without adding to it the idea of unity); if however we say "a man," it is to distinguish him from two; if however we use the word one in still another sense, it is by adding to it "some" (as, "someone"). Not so is it with essence; we say, "being one," conceiving of "being" ("essence") and one, as if forming a single whole, and in positing essence as one, we emphasize its narrow affinity with the Good. Thus conceived, essence becomes one; and in the one finds its origin and goal. Nevertheless it is not one as unity itself, but rather in a different manner, in this sense that the (unity of essence) admits priority and posteriority. What then is (the unity of essence) ? Must it not then be considered similar in all the parts (of essence), as something common to all (and consequently, as forming a genus) ? But in the first place, the point is also something common to all the lines, and nevertheless it is not a genus; in the numbers, unity is something common to all, and is not any more of a genus. Indeed, the unity which is found in the monad, in the dyad (or pair), and in other numbers, cannot be confused with unity in itself. Then, nothing hinders there being in essence some anterior, and other posterior parts, both simple and compound ones (which would be impossible for the One in itself). Even if the unity found everywhere in all the parts of essence were everywhere identical, by the mere fact that it would offer no difference, it could not give rise to species, and consequently, it could not be a genus.

11. We are bound however to enquire under what mode unity is contained in Being. How is what is termed the "dividing" effected - especially the dividing of the genera Being and unity? Is it the same division, or is it different in the two cases?

First then: In what sense, precisely, is any given particular called and known to be a unity? Secondly: Does unity as used of Being carry the same connotation as in reference to the Absolute?

Unity is not identical in all things; it has a different significance according as it is applied to the Sensible and the Intellectual realms - Being too, of course, comports such a difference - and there is a difference in the unity affirmed among sensible things as compared with each other; the unity is not the same in the cases of chorus, camp, ship, house; there is a difference again as between such discrete things and the continuous. Nevertheless, all are representations of the one exemplar, some quite remote, others more effective: the truer likeness is in the Intellectual; Soul is a unity, and still more is Intellect a unity and Being a unity.

When we predicate Being of a particular, do we thereby predicate of it unity, and does the degree of its unity tally with that of its being? Such correspondence is accidental: unity is not proportionate to Being; less unity need not mean less Being. An army or a choir has no less Being than a house, though less unity.

It would appear, then, that the unity of a particular is related not so much to Being as to a standard of perfection: in so far as the particular attains perfection, so far it is a unity; and the degree of unity depends on this attainment. The particular aspires not simply to Being, but to Being-in-perfection: it is in this strain towards their perfection that such beings as do not possess unity strive their utmost to achieve it.

Things of nature tend by their very nature to coalesce with each other and also to unify each within itself; their movement is not away from but towards each other and inwards upon themselves. Souls, moreover, seem to desire always to pass into a unity over and above the unity of their own substance. Unity in fact confronts them on two sides: their origin and their goal alike are unity; from unity they have arisen, and towards unity they strive. Unity is thus identical with Goodness ; for no being ever came into existence without possessing, from that very moment, an irresistible tendency towards unity.

From natural things we turn to the artificial. Every art in all its operation aims at whatsoever unity its capacity and its models permit, though Being most achieves unity since it is closer at the start.

That is why in speaking of other entities we assert the name only, for example man; when we say "one man," we have in mind more than one; and if we affirm unity of him in any other connection, we regard it as supplementary : but when we speak of Being as a whole we say it is one Being without presuming that it is anything but a unity; we thereby show its close association with Goodness.

Thus for Being, as for the others, unity turns out to be, in some sense, Principle and Term, not however in the same sense as for things of the physical order - a discrepancy leading us to infer that even in unity there are degrees of priority.

How, then, do we characterize the unity  in Being? Are we to think of it as a common property seen alike in all its parts? In the first place, the point is common to lines and yet is not their genus, and this unity we are considering may also be common to numbers and not be their genus - though, we need hardly say, the unity of Unity-Absolute is not that of the numbers, one, two and the rest. Secondly, in Being there is nothing to prevent the existence of prior and posterior, simple and composite: but unity, even if it be identical in all the manifestations of Being, having no differentiae can produce no species; but producing no species it cannot be a genus.
