2. De modo que, al buscar (en Platón) una enseñanza sobre nuestra alma, tocamos necesariamente esta cuestión sobre el alma en general, esto es, cómo se mantiene unida el alma al cuerpo. Pero con ella está relacionada también otra cuestión sobre la naturaleza del mundo, la de saber cómo debe ser este mundo en el que habita el alma, bien por su voluntad, bien por necesidad o de cualquier otra manera. Abocamos así igualmente a una cuestión sobre el creador y nos preguntamos si ha hecho bien o mal al crearlo, al unir el alma al cuerpo del mundo y, naturalmente, nuestras almas a nuestros cuerpos. Tal vez sea necesario que nuestras almas, que deben dominar a los seres inferiores, penetren lo más posible dentro de sí, en el supuesto de que deban dominar a aquéllos. Podrían evitar de este modo que todo se dispersase y fuese llevado a su lugar propio, porque todo en el universo asienta en su lugar apropiado, de acuerdo con su naturaleza. Para los cuerpos de que hablamos seria precisa una providencia múltiple y turbulenta, atenta a sus choques con otros muchos cuerpos, que aparecen sometidos a la necesidad y han de recibir una completa ayuda en las grandes dificultades que les acechan. El ser perfecto, en cambio, es un ser que se basta a sí mismo y que no necesita de ningún otro; nada hay en él que sea contrario a su naturaleza, ni él mismo tiene necesidad de una orden breve. Porque (el alma) es como naturalmente quiere ser, cuando no se dan en ella ni deseos ni pasiones. Lo cual ocurre así cuando nada pierde ni recibe.

Por ello dice (Platón) que nuestra alma, si se mantiene unida a esta alma perfecta, es ella también perfecta y alada y vuela por las alturas administrando todo el mundo. En tanto no deje esa alma y no penetre en los cuerpos o en algún otro objeto, gobernará fácilmente el universo como alma del todo que es. Porque no constituye un mal para el alma dar al cuerpo la fuerza para existir, mientras la providencia que ejerza sobre el ser inferior no le prive de permanecer en un lugar mejor. Pues realmente el cuidado del universo es doble: hay por un lado el del conjunto, que manda y ordena las cosas con una autoridad real, pero sin intervenir en nada, y el de cada uno de los seres, ejercido por una acción personal y por un contacto con el sujeto en el que el agente llegue a colmarse de la naturaleza de este mismo sujeto sobre el que actúa.

El alma llamada divina gobierna el cielo entero de la primera manera y se halla por encima de él por su parte mejor, enviándole también interiormente la última de sus potencias. No se diga, pues, que Dios ha creado el alma en un lugar inferior, porque el alma no está privada de lo que exige su naturaleza y posee desde siempre y para siempre un poder que no puede ser contrario a su naturaleza, Ese poder le pertenece continuamente y nunca ha tenido un comienzo. Cuando dice (Platón) que las almas de los astros guardan con su cuerpo la misma relación que el alma universal con el mundo — (Platón) coloca los cuerpos de los astros en los movimientos circulares del alma — , conserva para ellos la felicidad que verdaderamente les conviene. Porque hay dos razones que provocan nuestra irritación al hablar de la unión del alma con el cuerpo: una de ellas es la de que sirve de obstáculo para el pensamiento, y otra la de que llena al alma de placeres, de deseos y de temores , todo lo cual no acontece al alma de los astros, que no penetra en el interior de los cuerpos, ni puede atribuirse a ninguno, pues no es ella la que se encuentra en su cuerpo, sino su cuerpo el que se encuentra en ella. Ya que el alma es de tal naturaleza que no tiene necesidad ni esta falta de nada; de modo que tampoco puede estar llena de deseos y de temores. Ninguna cosa del cuerpo puede parecer temible al alma, dado que ninguna ocupación la hace inclinar hacia la tierra y la aparta de su mejor y beatífica contemplación. Muy al contrario, el alma se encuentra siempre cerca de las ideas y ordena el universo con su mismo poder, sin que ella intervenga en él para nada.

 Ainsi, en interrogeant Platon sur notre âme, nous sommes amenés à rechercher en général comment l'âme a été conduite par sa nature à entrer en commerce avec le corps. Nous arrivons par là à nous poser les questions suivantes : Quelle est la nature du monde où l'âme vit ainsi, soit par sa volonté, soit par nécessité, soit de quelque autre manière? Le Démiurge  agit-il sans rencontrer d'obstacle, ou en est-il de lui comme de nos âmes ?

D'abord, nos âmes, chargées d'administrer des corps moins parfaits que le monde, devaient y pénétrer profondément pour les maîtriser, parce que les éléments de ces corps tendent à se diviser et à revenir à la place qui leur est propre, tandis que, dans l'univers, toutes choses sont naturellement établies à leur place (13). En outre, nos corps exigent une prévoyance active et vigilante, parce qu'ils sont exposés à mille accidents par les objets qui les entourent, qu'ils ont toujours une foule de besoins, qu'ils réclament une protection continuelle contre les dangers qui les menacent (14). Mais le corps du monde est parfait et complet : il se suffit à lui-même, il n'a rien à souffrir de contraire à sa nature; par conséquent, il n'a besoin de recevoir de l'Âme universelle qu'un simple ordre, pour ainsi dire : aussi celle-ci peut-elle rester dans la disposition que sa nature la porte à vouloir conserver, demeurer impassible, n'éprouver aucun besoin. C'est pourquoi Platon dit que, lorsque notre âme vit avec cette Âme parfaite, elle devient elle-même parfaite, plane dans la région éthérée et gouverne le monde entier (15). Tant que notre âme ne s'éloigne pas de cette Âme pour entrer dans un corps et appartenir à un individu, elle administre facilement le monde, conjointement avec l'Âme universelle et de la même manière. Ce n'est donc pas absolument un mal pour l'âme de communiquer au corps l'être et la perfection, parce que les soins providentiels accordés à une nature inférieure n'empêchent pas celui qui les accorde de rester lui-même dans l'état de perfection.

Il y a en effet dans l'univers deux espèces de Providence [l'une universelle, l'autre particulière (16)] : la première, sans s'inquiéter des détails, règle tout comme il convient à une puissance royale; la seconde, opérant en quelque sorte comme un manœuvre (αὐτουργῷ τινι ποιήσει) abaisse sa puissance créatrice jusqu'à la nature inférieure des créatures en se mettant en contact avec elles (17). Or, comme c'est de la première manière que l'Âme divine (18) administre toujours tout l'univers, en le dominant par sa supériorité, et en envoyant en lui sa dernière puissance , on ne saurait accuser Dieu d'avoir donné à l'Âme universelle une mauvaise place : en effet, celle-ci n'a jamais été privée de sa puissance naturelle; elle la possède et elle la possédera toujours (parce que cette puissance n'est point contraire à son essence) ; elle la possède, dis-je, de toute éternité et sans aucune interruption.

Platon dit encore que les âmes des astres sont toujours avec leurs corps dans le même rapport que l'Âme universelle avec l'univers (19) (car il fait participer les astres aux mouvements de l'Âme universelle) ; il accorde ainsi à ces âmes la félicité qui leur convient. En effet, on blâme ordinairement le commerce de l'âme avec le corps pour deux motifs : d'abord, parce qu'il empêche l'âme de s'occuper des conceptions de l'intelligence; ensuite, parce qu'il l'expose à des sensations agréables ou pénibles et qu'il la remplit de désirs. Or, aucune de ces deux choses n'arrive à l'âme qui n'est pas entrée dans un corps et qui n'en dépend pas, qui n'appartient pas à tel individu : alors, au contraire, elle possède le corps de l'univers, qui n'a nul défaut, nul besoin, qui ne peut lui causer ni craintes ni désirs, parce qu'elle n'a rien à redouter pour lui. Ainsi, jamais aucun souci ne la force de s'abaisser aux objets terrestres, de se détourner de son heureuse et sublime contemplation : tout entière aux choses divines, elle gouverne le monde par une seule puissance, dont l'exercice n'entraîne aucune sollicitude (20).

QUESTIONS RAISED BY PLATO'S THEORIES.

2. Plato's theories about the soul lead us to ask how, in general, the soul has, by her nature, been led to enter into relations with the body. Other questions arise: What is the nature of the world where the soul lives thus, either voluntarily or necessarily, or in any other way? Does the Demiurge act without meeting any obstacle, or is it with him as with our souls ?

HUMAN BODIES ARE MORE DIFFICULT TO MANAGE THAN THE WORLD-BODY.

To begin with, our souls, charged with the administration of bodies less perfect than the world, had to penetrate within them profoundly in order to manage them; for the elements of these bodies tend to scatter, and to return to their original location, while, in the universe, all things are naturally distributed in their proper places. Besides, our bodies demand an active and vigilant foresight, because, by the surrounding objects they are exposed to many accidents; for they always have a crowd of needs, as they demand continual protection against the dangers that threaten them. But the body of the world is complete and perfect. It is self-sufficient; it has nothing to suffer contrary to its nature; and consequently, it (acts) on a mere order of the universal Soul. That is why the universal Soul can remain impassible, feeling no need, remaining in the disposition desired by her own nature. That is why Plato says that, when our soul dwells with this perfect Soul, she herself becomes perfect, soaring in the ethereal region, and governing the whole world. So long as a human soul does not withdraw from the (universal) Soul to enter into a body, and to belong to some individual, she easily administers the world, in the same manner, and together with the universal Soul. Communicating to the body essence and perfection is therefore, for the soul, not an unmixed evil; because the providential care granted to an inferior nature does not hinder him who grants it from himself remaining in a state of perfection.

HOW THE TWO-FOLD SOUL EXERTS A TWO-FOLD PROVIDENCE.

In the universe there are, indeed, two kinds of providences. The first Providence regulates everything in a royal manner, without performing any actions, or observing the details. The second, operating somewhat like an artisan, adjusts its creative power to the inferior nature of creatures by getting in contact with them. Now as the divine Soul (or, the principal power, always administers the whole world in the first or regal way, dominating the world by her superiority, and by injecting into the world her lowest power (nature), we could not accuse the divinity of having given a bad place to the universal Soul. Indeed, this universal Soul was never deprived of her natural power, possessing it always, because this power is not contrary to her being, possessing it uninterruptedly from all eternity.

STAR-SOULS, LIKE UNINCARNATE SOULS, GOVERN THE WORLD UNTROUBLEDLY.

(Plato) further states that the relation of the souls of the stars to their bodies is the same as that of the universal Soul to the universe, where he makes the stars participate in the movements of the universal Soul. He thus grants to those souls the blessedness which is suitable to them. The intercourse of the soul with the body is usually blamed for two things: because it hinders the soul from busying herself with the conceptions of intelligence, and then because it exposes her to agreeable or painful sensations which fill her with desires. Now neither of these two results affect the soul that has not entered into a body, and which does not depend thereon by belonging to some particular individual. Then, on the contrary, she possesses the body of the universe, which has no fault, no need, which can cause her neither fears nor desires, because she has nothing to fear. Thus no anxiety ever forces her to descend to terrestrial objects, or to distract herself from her happy and sublime contemplation. Entirely devoted to divine things, she governs the world by a single power, whose exercise involves no anxiety.

2. Enquiring, then, of Plato as to our own soul, we find ourselves forced to enquire into the nature of soul in general - to discover what there can be in its character to bring it into partnership with body, and, again, what this kosmos must be in which, willing unwilling or in any way at all, soul has its activity.

We have to face also the question as to whether the Creator has planned well or ill...... like our souls, which it may be, are such that governing their inferior, the body, they must sink deeper and deeper into it if they are to control it.

No doubt the individual body - though in all cases appropriately placed within the universe - is of itself in a state of dissolution, always on the way to its natural terminus, demanding much irksome forethought to save it from every kind of outside assailant, always gripped by need, requiring every help against constant difficulty: but the body inhabited by the World-Soul - complete, competent, self-sufficing, exposed to nothing contrary to its nature - this needs no more than a brief word of command, while the governing soul is undeviatingly what its nature makes it wish to be, and, amenable neither to loss nor to addition, knows neither desire nor distress.

This is how we come to read that our soul, entering into association with that complete soul and itself thus made perfect, walks the lofty ranges, administering the entire kosmos, and that as long as it does not secede and is neither inbound to body nor held in any sort of servitude, so long it tranquilly bears its part in the governance of the All, exactly like the world-soul itself; for in fact it suffers no hurt whatever by furnishing body with the power to existence, since not every form of care for the inferior need wrest the providing soul from its own sure standing in the highest.

The soul's care for the universe takes two forms: there is the supervising of the entire system, brought to order by deedless command in a kindly presidence, and there is that over the individual, implying direct action, the hand to the task, one might say, in immediate contact: in the second kind of care the agent absorbs much of the nature of its object.

Now in its comprehensive government of the heavenly system, the soul's method is that of an unbroken transcendence in its highest phases, with penetration by its lower power: at this, God can no longer be charged with lowering the All-Soul, which has not been deprived of its natural standing and from eternity possesses and will unchangeably possess that rank and habit which could never have been intruded upon it against the course of nature but must be its characteristic quality, neither failing ever nor ever beginning.

Where we read that the souls or stars stand to their bodily forms as the All to the material forms within it - for these starry bodies are declared to be members of the soul's circuit - we are given to understand that the star-souls also enjoy the blissful condition of transcendence and immunity that becomes them.

And so we might expect: commerce with the body is repudiated for two only reasons, as hindering the soul's intellective act and as filling with pleasure, desire, pain; but neither of these misfortunes can befall a soul which has never deeply penetrated into the body, is not a slave but a sovereign ruling a body of such an order as to have no need and no shortcoming and therefore to give ground for neither desire nor fear.

There is no reason why it should be expectant of evil with regard to such a body nor is there any such preoccupied concern, bringing about a veritable descent, as to withdraw it from its noblest and most blessed vision; it remains always intent upon the Supreme, and its governance of this universe is effected by a power not calling upon act.
