1. Decimos que el alma de cada ser es única porque se encuentra presente toda ella en cualquier parte del cuerpo. Es, por tanto, realmente única, porque no tiene una parte en un lugar del cuerpo y otra en otro. Así, el alma sensitiva en los seres sensibles y el alma vegetativa en las plantas se encuentra toda ella en todo el cuerpo y, a la vez, en cada parte de él. ¿Pero es que, de igual manera, mi alma, la tuya y todas las demás almas constituyen un alma única? ¿Y es que hay, asimismo, en el universo un alma única, que no es divisible según la masa sino que se manifiesta idéntica en todas partes? Pues, ¿por qué si mi alma es única, no ha de serlo también el alma del universo? Ahí no se da ciertamente ni masa material ni cuerpo alguno. Por lo cual, si mi alma y la tuya provienen del alma del universo, convendrá que todas las almas sean una sola. Pero, ¿qué es entonces esa alma? Hemos de precisar antes de nada si hablamos con propiedad al decir que todas las almas son una sola, como cuando afirmamos, por ejemplo, que el alma de cada uno es única. Porque resulta absurdo que mi alma y la de un ser cualquiera sean un alma única. Sería preciso, en ese caso, que cuando yo experimento una sensación la experimentase igualmente ese ser, y que, cuando yo soy bueno, lo sea también él, sin mengua de que pueda desear cuando yo deseo y de que, en general, uno y otro, e incluso el universo, tengamos las mismas impresiones, de modo que la impresión que yo sufra la experimente conmigo el universo. Si en realidad no hay más que un alma, ¿cómo podremos hablar de un alma racional y de otra irracional, o de las almas que se dan en los animales y en las plantas? Si de nuevo no admitimos esto, no existirá la unidad del universo y no podremos encontrar un principio único para las almas.

De même que l’âme de chaque animal est une, parce qu’elle est présente tout entière dans tout le corps, et qu’elle est ainsi réellement une, parce qu’elle n’a pas une de ses parties dans un organe, une autre dans un autre organe ; de même que l’âme sensitive est également une dans les êtres qui sentent, et que l’âme végétative est partout tout entière dans chaque partie des végétaux ; de même, mon âme et la tienne n’en font-elles qu’une, toutes les âmes n’en font-elles qu’une, et l’Âme universelle, présente dans tous les êtres, est-elle une parce qu’elle n’est pas divisée à la manière d’un corps, mais qu’elle est partout la même ? — Pourquoi, en effet, l’âme qui est en moi serait-elle une, et l’Âme universelle ne serait-elle pas une également, puisqu’elle n’est pas plus que la mienne une étendue matérielle ni un corps ? Si mon âme et la tienne procèdent de l’Âme universelle et que cette Âme soit une, mon âme et la tienne ne doivent faire qu’une âme. Si l’on suppose que l’Âme universelle et la mienne procèdent d’une Âme une, toutes les âmes dans cette hypothèse ne font encore qu’une âme. Il faut donc examiner en quoi consiste cette Âme qui est une.

Considérons d’abord si l’on a le droit d’affirmer que toutes les âmes n’en font qu’une dans le sens où l’on dit que l’âme de chaque individu est une. Il semble absurde de prétendre que mon âme et que la tienne n’en font qu’une en ce sens : car il faudrait alors que tu sentisses quand je sens, que tu fusses vertueux quand je le suis, que tu eusses les mêmes désirs que moi, que nos âmes éprouvassent non-seulement les mêmes sentiments l’une que l’autre, mais encore les mêmes sentiments que l’Âme universelle, en sorte que chaque sensation éprouvée par moi fût ressentie par l’univers entier. Si toutes les âmes n’en font qu’une de cette manière, pourquoi une âme est-elle raisonnable et l’autre irraisonnable, pourquoi celle-ci est-elle dans un animal et celle-là dans un végétal ? D’un autre côté, si nous n’admettons pas qu’il y ait une Âme une, nous ne pourrons expliquer l’unité de l’univers ni trouver pour les âmes un principe unique.

IF ALL SOULS BE ONE IN THE WORLD-SOUL, WHY SHOULD THEY NOT TOGETHER FORM ONE?

1. Just as the soul of each animal is one, because she is entirely present in the whole body, and because she is thus really one, because she does not have one part in one organ, and some other part in another; and just as the sense-soul is equally one in all the beings which feel, and just as the vegetative soul is everywhere entirely one in each part of the growing plants; why then should your soul and mine not form a single unity? Why should not all souls form but a single one? Why should not the universal (Soul) which is present in all beings, be one because she is not divided in the manner of a body, being everywhere the same? Why indeed should the soul in myself form but one, and the universal (Soul) likewise not be one, similarly, since no more than my own is this universal (Soul) either material extension, or a body? If both my soul and yours proceed from the universal (Soul), and if the latter be one, then should my soul and yours together form but a single one. Or again, on the supposition that the universal (Soul) and mine proceed from a single soul, even on this hypothesis would all souls form but a single one. We shall have to examine in what (this Soul which is but) one consists.

SOULS MAY NOT FORM A NUMERIC UNITY. BUT MAY FORM A GENERIC UNITY.

Let us first consider if it may be affirmed that all souls form but one in the sense in which it is said that the soul of each individual is one. It seems absurd to pretend that my soul and yours form but one in this (numerical) sense; for then you would be feeling simultaneously with my feeling, and you would be virtuous when I was, and you would have the same desires as I, and not only would we both have the same sentiments, but even the identical sentiments of the universal (Soul), so that every sensation felt by me would have been felt by the entire universe. If in this manner all the souls form but one, why is one soul reasonable, and the other unreasonable, why is the one in an animal, and the other in a plant? On the other hand, if we do not admit that there is a single Soul, we will not be able to explain the unity of the universe, nor find a single principle for (human) souls.

1. That the Soul of every individual is one thing we deduce from the fact that it is present entire at every point of the body — the sign of veritable unity — not some part of it here and another part there. In all sensitive beings the sensitive soul is an omnipresent unity, and so in the forms of vegetal life the vegetal soul is entire at each several point throughout the organism.

Now are we to hold similarly that your soul and mine and all are one, and that the same thing is true of the universe, the soul in all the several forms of life being one soul, not parcelled out in separate items, but an omnipresent identity?

If the soul in me is a unity, why need that in the universe be otherwise seeing that there is no longer any question of bulk or body? And if that, too, is one soul and yours, and mine, belongs to it, then yours and mine must also be one: and if, again, the soul of the universe and mine depend from one soul, once more all must be one.

What then in itself is this one soul?

First we must assure ourselves of the possibility of all souls being one as that of any given individual is.

It must, no doubt, seem strange that my soul and that of any and everybody else should be one thing only: it might mean my feelings being felt by someone else, my goodness another's too, my desire, his desire, all our experience shared with each other and with the (one-souled) universe, so that the very universe itself would feel whatever I felt.

Besides how are we to reconcile this unity with the distinction of reasoning soul and unreasoning, animal soul and vegetal?

Yet if we reject that unity, the universe itself ceases to be one thing and souls can no longer be included under any one principle.
